We are first introduced to the term Domain Expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen when Ryoumen Sukuna shows off his powers by using this technique. Sukuna’s Malevolent Shrine made easy work of the special grade cursed spirit that had manifested at the Juvenile Prison facility in Jujutsu Kaisen episode 4. While we were left in awe of Sukuna’s powers, there are also questions raised about this peculiar cursed technique.
Sukuna was able to construct a whole new time-space that defied the laws of physics and nature. So what exactly is a domain expansion and what does it do?
What is Domain Expansion?
Domain Expansion, also known as territorial expansion, is a cursed technique that lets a user construct a three dimensional enclosed space. This enclosed space is constructed with the help of cursed energy and manifested using a user’s cursed technique. A sphere of cursed energy quickly expands and traps any opponent who is within the confines of the domain.
Only sorcerers or cursed spirits with a good grasp on their cursed technique will be able to deploy a domain expansion technique. Creating the environment of a domain expansion also requires a ton of cursed energy.
The domain that Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki experienced at the Juvenile facility was an incomplete domain. This is because it was not manifested using a cursed technique, probably because the special grade cursed spirit didn’t have a grasp on cursed techniques. If it were a proper domain, Yuji and others wouldn’t have been able to escape it.
Benefits of Domain Expansion:
It is almost impossible to run away or break out from the walls of the cursed energy once trapped inside the domain. However, one can easily enter the domain from outside.
Within this enclosed space, the caster has considerable advantage over their opponent. The stats of the person who deploys the domain is increased while the domain is active. The cursed techniques they use are more refined or powerful than before. This can be considered akin to a buff that players may get in video games.
When the caster deploys a cursed technique within this domain, it will always hit the opponent. Thus one can be sure of dealing their opponent a considerable damage. But if the opponent is a jujutsu sorcerer or a cursed energy user, they can counter it with their own cursed technique.
However, if the domain is incomplete, its functions are notably weakened.
How to counter Domain Expansion:
The most effective way to counter a domain expansion is to expand your own domain. When two or more domains are expanded, the most refined one, or the one with the most cursed energy and better cursed technique will reign supreme.
When Gojo and Jogo’s domains clash, it is the former’s Infinite Void that reigns supreme. This is because he was the more powerful one of the two. The compatibility of the two domains and the cursed energy also plays a major role in deciding which domain will trump.
Another domain technique is the Simple Domain. It is also a handy anti-domain technique for shamans who cannot counter domain expansions.
What is a Simple Domain in Jujutsu Kaisen
Simple Domain is a domain technique that lets a shaman cast a neutral space around themselves. This neutral space nullifies the cursed technique of a domain expansion, protecting the shaman. The difference between Domain Expansion and Simple Domain lies in Cursed Energy.
The area in a Simple Domain is not imbued with cursed energy, while Domain Expansion is covering a large area with such energy. This lack of cursed energy momentarily eliminates the cursed energy, and thereby the techniques, of an attacking shaman. While Simple Domain is more of a defensive technique, a shaman can also use it to attack.
Miwa Kasumi using Simple Domain is the first instance of it in Jujutsu Kaisen. She used it twice in the School exchange event against Yuji and Maki. Her Simple Domain has a few special characteristics.
In Miwa’s case, the Simple Domain covers an area of 2.21 meters. This area gives her a guaranteed hit at anyone who enters it using her New Shadow Style sword technique. Unfortunately, at the school event, both Maki and Yuji didn’t possess any cursed technique while being physical powerhouses. Thus, she could not neutralize their technique and hit them.
The Simple Domain user also has to keep their feet planted on the ground, or the technique is lost. Miwa went through this against Maki.

Kokichi Muta, Todo, and Ui Ui are the other users of the Simple Domain in the story.
Kokichi used the fundamental principle of neutralizing cursed techniques against Mahito’s seemingly unassailable technique. He used a Technique Charge function of his Ultimate Mechamaru to inject tubes into Mahito’s body. This way, he could neutralize Idle Transfiguration and damage Mahito’s soul.
Similarly, Todo used the Simple Domain to counter Mahito’s Domain Expansion of 0.2 seconds at Shibuya.
Another interesting use of Simple Domain came from Ui Ui, Mei Mei’s brother. While battling against the Smallpox Diety, he used it to protect himself. If he hadn’t used the Simple Domain, he could not have countered Smallpox Diety’s domain. However, to use his Simple Domain, Ui Ui needs permission from Mei Mei.
We saw Simple Domain can counter domains, but will it do so against Gojo’s Infinite Void?
