The yaoi manga genre is an expansive, ever-evolving world that offers far more variety than meets the eye.
From heartwarming love stories and laugh-out-loud comedies to intense, smutty romances, there’s a yaoi manga for every BL lover.
To be honest, it offers way more than the Yaoi anime list!
Whether you’re looking for a soft, wholesome romance that leaves you smiling, or a steamy tale full of passion, this list has got you covered.
To make things even easier, I’ve organized the titles according to subgenres, so you can effortlessly navigate through this ultimate yaoi manga collection and find your next favorite read!
Fair warning: I have only listed out manga in this list, and not manhwas and manhuas! That will follow soon hopefully! Well, this one took over 4 months to compile and make, and I feel I have only scratched the surface. I will be going through a lot more titles and expand this list in the near future. I am currently reading Fangs btw!
Shout out to our writer Subhamoy Das for contributing to this one too!!
Table of Contents
Classic BL/Yaoi manga recommendations:
These are the classic titles in this genre that are popular and widely recommended. The titles in this section are a mix of fluff, smut and amazing plot.
I will be mentioning more titles according to the genres after this, but if you are a beginner, then these are the best BL/Yaoi manga for you to read.
1. Given
Author: Natsuki Kizu
Status: Completed (9 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

Given by Natsuki Kizu is a yaoi manga that will stay with you long after you finish reading. It’s not just about romance, though – it’s a beautiful story about self-discovery, music, and healing.
Mafuyu, the main character, is this high school student who finds solace in his guitar after a terrible loss. Then there’s Ritsuka, a talented but cold guitarist.
When their paths collide, a spark ignites. Their connection goes way beyond music and thus unfurls an engaging relationship. The story doesn’t have a particular direction, it’s all about growing and healing for the characters!
The characters in the manga have good depth as opposed to a trashy cliche BL, with their emotions, struggles and everything feeling very real – which again is perfectly portrayed through the amazing art.
Though the manga could have elaborated more upon the issues it touches upon, Given, overall, is still a must-read for any yaoi fan. I finished this one in a single sitting – or maybe two!!
2. Doukyuusei (Classmates)
Author: Asumiko Nakamura
Status: Compled (1 volume) + has multiple sequels and spin-offs
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment

Doukyuusei (Classmates) by Asumiko Nakamura is a feel-good yaoi manga with a lot of heart. A lot of people prefer its movie adaptation, partly due to the art, however, I feel the art goes perfectly with the story that is being portrayed.
The manga follows two high school boys, Hikaru Kusakabe and Rihito Sajou, who are complete opposites.
Their paths cross as Kusakabe once notices that Sajou is unable to perform well for the upcoming chorus festival and offers to tutor him.
This unlikely bond is also what makes the story special – as slowly, a beautiful friendship blossoms into something more.
Doukyuusei does a great job in portraying teenage emotions, alongside a sweet and easy going romance. This manga leans heavily on the shounen-ai tropes, meaning you won’t find any steamy scenes and other staple yaoi elements.
However, reading this yaoi manga feels like a refreshing summer breeze. Light on the drama, and totally fun!!
I still haven’t caught up on all the sequels and side stories, but I read the second part (Sotsu gyou sei) and it doesn’t disappoint either!
3. Haru Wo Daiteita (Embracing Love)
Author: Youka Nitta
Status: Completed (14 volumes) + has a sequel
English Release: SuBLime

Haru Wo Daiteita or Embracing Love is a must read classic when it comes to the domain of yaoi manga. Though it was released back in late 90s, it still continues to be loved by the BL manga connoisseurs.
The setting of the manga is unique- as the two main characters, a reserved Iwaki and outgoing Kato, are adult film actors. An unusual audition scene sparks a connection between the two, and Kato boldly pursues a relationship with Iwaki thereafter.
Embracing Love slowly builds the plot, as it focuses more on the relationship between the two main characters and shows how they grapple to express their feelings for each other.
It’s high on drama, and also on the steamy scenes – thanks to its non traditional setting. I’d say Embracing love is a must read for anyone who is into yaoi manga!!
4. Sasaki and Miyano
Author: Shou Harusono
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Yen Press

Pure chocolate!! What else do I say?
Sasaki and Miyano by Shou Harusono is a must-read for any yaoi fan. It’s a delightful coming-of-age story that explores love with a refreshing innocence.
Sasaki, a cool upperclassman, finds himself inexplicably drawn to the younger, clumsy Miyano. What starts as playful teasing blossoms into a sweet and awkward romance. The classic seme and uke!!
This manga doesn’t have a unique plot or setting to speak of, instead, it’s the relatable Sasaki and the fluffball Miyano who steal the show.
Their dynamic is beautiful – full of adorable misunderstandings, hilarious moments, and genuine emotional connection, all wrapped in some beautiful art!!
Sasaki & Miyano, however, is not just about the fluff though. It does touch upon some complex topics, without going out of pace. Definitely a perfect yaoi manga for a beginner to get into!!
5. Junjou Romantica
Author: Shungiku Nakamura
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Tokyopop (you can find it online)

Once again, I am including a title that is widely loved by the yaoi fans! Some people I know have begun their journey into the Boys Love world with this title, and holds a special place in their hearts – even with its shortcomings!
Unlike the yaoi manga I suggested till now, Junjou Romantica isn’t just about one couple, though. It’s a collection of interwoven stories that explore different facets of love and desire. It has drama, angst and light-hearted moments, making it a perfect place to begin your BL manga journey.
The artstyle too is nothing to scoff at, as it perfectly complements the story. You might not like it if you’re not into the 90s styles though. Offering a unique blend of laughter, tears, and captivating characters, I’d say Junjou Romantica is a must-read.
Now, the author of Junjou Romantica – Shungiku Nakamura – also has The World’s Greatest First Love manga to her credits. It often gets compared to Romantica, and you should definitely check that out if you liked this one!!! I have covered it next in the list.
6. The World’s Greatest First Love
Author: Shungiku Nakamura
Status: Ongoing
English Release: SuBLime

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi by Shungiku Nakamura is another classic yaoi manga that explores the complexities of rekindling a first love in a professional setting.
The story revolves around Ritsu Onodera, a literary editor who transfers to Marukawa Publishing after getting tired of the favoritism he received at his father’s company.
However, instead of being placed in the literature department, he finds himself in the shoujo manga section under the supervision of the stern editor-in-chief, Masamune Takano.
What Ritsu didn’t expect was to come face-to-face with his high school love—Takano. Now forced to work together, the two are entangled in a complicated mix of professional and personal conflicts, leading Ritsu to question if his feelings for Takano have truly faded away or if their “first love” still holds a spark.
The romance aside, I feel that the manga has done a great job portraying the nuances of the publishing industry. You can glean a lot of interesting information from here.
While the similarities to Junjou Romantic are obvious, it still makes for a great read. The artstyle has considerable improved in this work in my opinion, so those who dropped Junjou due to that should definitely give this a try.
Once again, Shungiku Nakamura delivers a complete package!
7. Therapy Game
Author: Meguru Hinohara
Status: Completed (2 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

Therapy Game by Meguru Hinohara is a yaoi manga that’s both funny and thought-provoking, with a dash of angst and a whole lot of heart.
The story revolves around Minato, a college student seeking revenge on Shizuma, a recently heartbroken man, after a drunken one-night stand.
Minato plans to seduce and then dump Shizuma as part of a mean bet. But guess what? Cupid throws a wrench in his plans. As they spend more time together, their initial animosity melts, revealing a surprising attraction.
The manga goes beyond cliches to tackle serious themes alongside the romance. Despite its short span, the manga explores past hurts, acceptance, and the power of vulnerability amazingly.
Along with the character development, the art-style is another high for Therapy Game manga and is a classic that you should not be sleeping on!!
8. Love Stage!!
Author: Eiki Eiki, Mikiyo Tsuda
Status: Completed (7 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

Love Stage!! is a funny one, I give you that. It does a great job in concocting relatable scenarios, and manages to be hilarious at times.
On top of that, I absolutely loved the art style, it is unique. Might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I loved it. So, it’s safe to say that even among the classics, this one is a standout. I would have totally called it a cult manga if not for its huge following!
That said, this is a perfect pick for both beginners or even veteran yaoi connoisseurs. Well, there is a pretty good chance that you have already read this one if you are a veteran!
Coming to the plot, it follows Sena Izumi, an 18-year-old otaku and aspiring manga artist born into a family of famous entertainers. Despite his family’s expectations for him to enter showbiz, Izumi has no interest in the limelight and dreams of becoming a successful manga creator instead.
His peaceful life takes a surprising turn when he’s roped into a commercial shoot and ends up reunited with popular actor Ryoma Ichijo—who has been in love with Izumi ever since they starred in a wedding commercial together as children.
As they navigate the complex world of showbiz, the two find themselves entangled in a series of misunderstandings, hilarious mishaps, and growing romantic feelings that neither saw coming.
9. Seven Days
Author: Venio Tachibana, Rihito Takarai
Status: Completed (2 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

I picked up Seven Days manga because the setting intrigued me very much. It explores the development of a relationship within a single week – and in quite a lovely manner.
The story begins when Yuzuru Shino, a third-year high school student, jokingly asks out his junior, Touji Seryou, who has a habit of dating anyone who asks him out on a Monday and breaking up with them by Sunday if he doesn’t fall in love.
Unexpectedly, Seryou accepts, and what starts as a playful experiment gradually turns into something more as they navigate their feelings throughout the week.
Though it’s only 10 chapters long, the romance is still slowburn. It cuts down on the smut common in Yaoi tropes, and instead focuses on the emotional narrative and subtly moves the plot forward!
As the characters get to know each other, we get more involved in their story! It is a heartwarming read, and the premise is pretty unique among the classics.
While Venio Tachibana has made sure to explore the characters well in a short span, Rihito Takarai’s art perfectly complements the story, making for an engrossing read!
10. Seaside Stranger
Author: Kii Kanna
Status: Completed (1 volumes) + has sequel
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment

The presence of Seaside Stranger (Umibe no Etranger) in the classic yaoi manga section might confuse some of you, but this one is a personal recommendation from me!
A common aspect that is found in the BL trope is the fetishizing of its couples, sometimes a bit too much. However, you’ll find that missing in this work by Kanna Kii.
Seaside Stranger is a slice of life yaoi manga which focuses on Shun, an aspiring gay novelist who was abandoned by his parents for being homosexual, and Mio who lost both his parents.
The plot focuses on their romance and their daily activities against the backdrop of a picturesque beach.
The biggest complaint about this manga is that the romantic development between the two happens in the blink of an eye. While I agree, the thing that captivated me the most was the laid back vibes and absolutely stunning art.
This is a manga I can pick on a day I want to laze around and read without any trouble.
Umibe no Etranger was meant to be a short story, and hence the abrupt pacing in the first volume is understandable. The story was then expanded, and subsequently we get more character development in the following volumes (titled Harukaze no Etranger).
Yaoi manga with good portrayal of queer relationships:
Stepping away from the traditional yaoi tropes of fetishization and intense seme-uke dynamics, I’ll be suggesting some manga that offer a refreshingly realistic portrayal of queer relationships.
These stories delve into the complexities of love, identity, and the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ couples in a relatable way.
If you’re looking for yaoi manga that prioritizes emotional exploration over stereotypes, then this section will resonate with you.
1. Our Dreams At Dusk
Author: Yuhki Kamatani
Status: Completed (4 volumes)
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment

The first, and without a doubt the best manga in this section of “forgetting the typical yaoi tropes” is Shimanami Tasogare by Yuhki Kamatani.
You can tell me anything, but I’m not gonna ask.
Unlike most yaoi, Shimanami Tasogare feels real. It follows the story of Tasuku Kaname, a closeted gay teenager drowning in isolation and fear.
After being outed (thanks to a misunderstanding!), he’s at his lowest point. But then, fate throws him a lifeline as a mysterious girl, who is only known as Someone-san, leads him to a group that has become a haven for LGBTQ+ people.
Here Tasuku meets this incredible cast of characters, each one with their own story of self-discovery, societal pressures, and the constant fight for acceptance.
Shimanami Tasogare shows the everyday prejudice, the subtle digs, and the constant fear of rejection that LGBTQ+ people face. But trust me, it’s not all doom and gloom!
It’s a manga depicting the power of communities! If romance is what interests you, then you should be invested in the side characters Haruko and Saki.
2. Pink Heart Jam
Author: Shikke
Status: Completed (2 volumes)
English Release: futekiya

While miscommunication is a common plot forwarding device in generic yaoi manga, Pink Heart Jam is all about how the two main characters communicate with each other! And then there is some good ecchi scenes.
The plot follows college freshman Haiga who is captivated by Kanae, a charismatic upperclassman with a talent for guitar, on his very first day.
Tell me you weren’t attracted to Kanae!!
A wild dare takes an unexpected turn when Haiga discovers Kanae moonlights at a male brothel. Thrown into a whirlwind of confusion and undeniable attraction, Haiga wrestles with his newfound desires and Kanae’s enigmatic behavior.
There is angst, and there are explicit scenes, however the highlight certainly has to be how Kanae and Haiga approach their relationship. They are both aware of what they want, and they make sure to talk and understand each other quite well.
I mean, there are many instances where the story could have gone the cliched way with the characters making out, or bringing in the seme-uke dynamics. But nope, the author knew what exactly they wanted to portray!
I also liked how Haiga explored his own sexuality as his bond deepens with Kanae. While Kanae might steal hearts, Haiga is one innocent peach and deserves all the love in the world!! It has a sequel which is ongoing, so make sure to check that out too!
3. My Brother’s Husband
Author: Gengoroh Tagame
Status: Completed (4 volumes)
English Release: Pantheon Books

My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame is a beautiful yaoi manga which tackles the stigma associated with LGBTQ+ relationships, particularly within a conservative family structure. The art is very bara style, but the story totally isn’t. Tagame is well known for his smutty works though!
This isn’t a story about two people falling in love, it’s one about overcoming grief, and forming new connections!
The plot follows Yaichi, a single father struggling to come to terms with the death of his estranged twin brother, Ryoji. When Ryoji’s Canadian husband, Mike, arrives unexpectedly, Yaichi’s world is thrown into disarray.
Tagame subtly explores the homophobia that exists within Japanese society through the eyes of Yaichi. It doesn’t shove hate down your throat, but it shows how everyday prejudice can be a constant struggle for LGBTQ+ people
However, the character’s growth in the manga – and the eventual bond that develops between Mike and Yaichi is the highlight of the story. Do not be put off by the simple art style, it definitely grows on you as the manga progresses!!
4. Ao No Flag (Blue Flag)
Author: Kaito
Status: Completed (8 volumes)
English Release: VIZ media

Ao no Flag or Blue Flag by Kaito is more of a shounen-ai than, strictly speaking, a yaoi manga. It features a love quadruple. And in that quadruple we have a budding BL in the forefront.
The plot follows childhood friends Taichi and Toma who have grown apart over the years. Though they have been in the same class for close to three years, Taichi keeps his distance from the popular Toma.
Enter Futaba, a shy girl, who asks Taichi’s help to win Toma’s heart.
As Taichi plays cupid, hidden feelings surface – and he falls for Futaba (who only has eyes for Toma). But the biggest twist? Toma, the object of Futaba’s affection, has been secretly in love with Taichi this whole time.
Blue Flag makes it to this list purely because of how well it has portrayed the feelings of high-school students. It’s not entirely unique, but it distances itself well from the tropes.
It’s a fun read and definitely a manga you need to have in your list!
5. I Think Our Son Is Gay
Author: Okura
Status: Completed (5 volumes)
English Release: Square Enix

I Think Our Son Is Gay by Okura is a totally light-hearted manga in which Tomoko, a doting mom, suspects her closeted teenage son Hiroki might be gay. While he hasn’t come out yet, her watchful eye catches the signs.
Instead of pressuring him, Tomoko offers quiet support, navigating her own anxieties and hoping Hiroki will find the courage to be himself.
Unlike most yaoi manga, I Think Our Son Is Gay focuses on the story from the perspective of Hiroki’s mother, Tomoko. Also, the usual angst and dramatic elements are absent in this work as it leans more towards being wholesome and supportive.
The author does a great job in highlighting how important acceptance and creating a safe space is when it comes to teenagers discovering their sexuality.
It’s a realistic portrayal of a closeted teenager’s feelings through his mother’s eyes, filled with humor and a healthy dose of mom-approved awkwardness.
6. I Hear The Sunspot
Author: Yuki Fumino
Status: Completed (1 volume) + has sequels
English Release: One Peace Books

Here we have a yaoi manga which has handled the romance between its two main characters in a very subtle way. This is because the author Yuki Fumino, inspired by friends and acquaintances with disabilities, prioritizes exploring the challenges faced by those with hearing loss.
However, like I mentioned, there is a very subtle queer romance that develops, and because of that this title gets included here!
The plot follows college freshman Kohei, who has hearing loss and struggles to connect with classmates. After a chance encounter with the outgoing Taichi, they strike a deal – Taichi takes notes for food, leading to an unexpected friendship.
As they navigate communication challenges and societal misunderstandings, their bond deepens, blossoming into something more than just a friendship.
Fumino makes sure her characters won’t stick to the typical shounen-ai tropes. Instead we get a far more complex and layered story, with a healthy focus on developing the characters.
The interactions between a boisterous Taichi and withdrawn Kohei are endearing. Overall, it’s quite a wholesome read!!
7. Boy Meets Maria
Author: Peyo
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment

For the second time in this list, I am going to suggest a manga which is more than just a romance. Boy Meets Maria by Peyo is a yaoi manga which throws away the rulebook and punches you right in the feels.
The manga follows Taiga, a passionate aspiring actor, who falls head over heels for the beautiful and enigmatic Maria who he meets in the drama club. There’s just one twist – Maria is actually a boy named Yuu Arima struggling with his identity.
The manga has highlighted the complexities of gender and portrayed gender dysphoria with much sensitivity. The best part has to be Taiga’s unwavering support.
His love isn’t conditional on gender; it’s about seeing and accepting Arima for who he truly is.
“Just stay as Yuu.”
Once again, the plot and some developments might feel rushed due the manga being only 7 chapters long. Still, Boy Meets Maria is a must-read according to me.
Most wholesome BL/shounen-ai manga:
Yaoi is often associated with its more mature themes, but there’s a wide range of wholesome BL stories that are just as compelling and heartwarming. These manga offer emotional depth, sweet moments, and feel-good experiences that are sure to touch your heart.
Some are poignant, while others are pure fluff—but all of them are bound to lift your spirits when you need it most. With that in mind, let’s dive into some of the most wholesome yaoi manga that you won’t want to miss!
1. Old Fashioned Cupcake
Author: Sagan Sagan
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: SuBLime

Has a mature old guy? Check! Focuses on the struggles of this particular guy? Check! Is super wholesome? Check! Well, this one takes the cake for me!!
The plot of Old Fashioned Cupcake revolves around Nozue, a 39-year-old salaryman stuck in a monotonous routine of work and sleep.
His life takes an unexpected turn when his younger subordinate, Togawa, suggests they try something new and spontaneous: visiting a pancake shop. Yep, Togawa is curious about Nozue!
What starts as a simple meal soon blossoms into a journey of self-discovery, as Togawa encourages Nozue to step out of his comfort zone and embrace life’s small joys. The romance is slow-burn, but trust me, you will in no way regret reading this one!!
Proper communication makes a relationship long-lasting, and as the two characters list each other’s concerns, you will realize what it means to love, to understand and to COMMUNICATE! There is angst, but there isn’t too much angst, and that is a huge plus point according to me.
Sequels are enjoyable when a story is finished, and they have the potential to have more, so why not hop straight into “Old Fashioned Cupcake with Cappuccino” after this?
2. My Summer of You
Author: Nagisa Furuya
Status: Completed (3 volumes)
English Release: Kodansha

We covered some great entries till now, but get ready for even more of fluff with My Summer of You. The manga is treated as a series with the name – My Summer of You. It has three volumes, each detailing a different summer together in the lives of our protagonists.
The manga follows the relationship between Wataru and Chiharu, sharing a common interest in watching movies. Despite their differences in popularity, they regularly go to the theater.
What makes it special is the easy-going chemistry between the two. The manga takes time to develop their friendship, making the progression of their relationship very natural.
As they discover their true feelings, fluff BL fans will enjoy every single moment of this wonderful story.
I can’t even begin to say how cute this one is. Also, if you are a movie lover, then you have more incentive to fall in love with this!
3. My Pudgy Coworker Is A Snack
Author: Haikin
Status: Completed
English Release: Coolmics

My Pudgy Coworker is a Snack by Haikin is a short and sweet yaoi manga that follows the budding romance between Takahashi, a shy office worker, and his plus-sized colleague, Fukuyama. It’s a perfect balance of smut and fluff!
It starts off with smut, as we see Fukuyama and Takahashi making out in a love hotel. And then we get a backstory about all the incidents that led to that moment.
After their encounter, Takahashi realizes that his attraction to Fukuyama runs deeper than he initially thought. Despite societal expectations, Fukuyama embraces his size with confidence, and Takahashi finds himself falling for both his personality and looks.
Their relationship develops in a lighthearted, yet steamy, office romance that defies traditional body image stereotypes. And I really have to stress on how positively it portrays a plus-sized character, because that is not something you see everyday in yaoi manga.
I really wished for the manga to be a bit more longer, because I honestly didn’t get enough of Takahashi and Fukuyama. Sedlyf.
4. Tadaima, Okaeri (Welcome Home)
Author: Ichi Ichikawa
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Manga Club

Well, folks, this fluffball of a manga right here is a unique entry to the list. The story doesn’t start with your usual development, instead, it begins off with a setting where the characters in question are already married!
But it is not that easy, as Masaki and Hiromu’s relationship is frowned upon due to Masaki’s status of being Omega gender – someone who can give birth regardless of their gender.
As depicted by the social hierarchy, Masaki is considered an inferior human due to his gender: but that doesn’t stop him and his spouse from being a happy family. As problems arise, will they be able to continue fighting?
Realism and wholesomeness together make this one a must-read. Omegaverse may not be everyone’s cup of tea but the character interactions and dynamics alone make it a wonderful read.
5. The Scene of My Rumspringa
Author: Kaya Azuma
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: MediBang

The Scene of my Rumspringa (Rumspringa no Joukei) is a very unique and compelling yaoi manga which according to me is a must read for fans who are looking for an emotional yet wholesome story!
The plot is centered on Theo, a sheltered Amish teenager, embarking on his Rumspringa – a period of exploration before one decides whether to commit to the Amish faith.
Thrust into the unfamiliar world, he stumbles upon Oz, a charismatic bartender who moonlights as a gay-for-pay worker. Despite their contrasting backgrounds, a bond forms between them.
The gorgeous art aside, The Scene of my Rumspringa provides a fresh and interesting backdrop for its story, as it carefully explores the lesser known Amish community.
Also, the dynamic between a naive Theo and a free spirited Oz is simply beautiful. The manga focuses more on the rich character development that these two undergo, as opposed to the cliched erotica or angst!
Once again, a short read with just five chapters, and I am left craving for more.
6. The Cat Proposed
Author: Dentou Hayane
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Tokyopop

Just like Rumspringa, The Cat Proposed is a very sweet manga with a touch of melancholy to it. It blends supernatural elements rooted in traditional Japanese folklore into the story, making it unique.
The story follows Souta Matoi, an overworked salaryman on the verge of despair, who unexpectedly encounters Kihachi, a bakeneko (a shape-shifting cat spirit) at a traditional kodan performance.
Upon realizing that Souta can see his true form, Kihachi proposes that they become mates (the only other option Souta had was to be cursed). And so, his world becomes intertwined with that of the yokai.
The relationship between Kihachi and Souta transforms into quite a wholesome one. Well, there are the usual misunderstandings between the two, but it is all relatively angst free.
However, you should steel yourself for some emotional moments, as the characters look to heal their broken self relying on each other.
While the mythical elements in the story certainly make it an interesting read, it is the artstyle that captivated me the most in it.
7. Restart After Coming Back Home
Author: Cocomi
Status: Completed (1 volume) + has a sequel
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment

A short yet blissful story, this gem of a manga truly represents the best wholesome shounen-ai/yaoi out there. Restart After Coming Back Home is another manga that will tend to the likes of anyone looking for such recommendations.
The plot focuses on Mitsuomi Kozuka, a 25-year-old who returns to his rural hometown after losing his job in Tokyo.
Feeling aimless, Mitsuomi reconnects with his roots and meets Yamato Kumai, a kind and mysterious man around his age who was adopted by a local farmer. As the two spend time together, their relationship gradually evolves from friendship into a deep, emotional bond.
You’ll experience a horde of emotions after reading the Restart after series, and eventually feel fulfilled thanks to author Cocomi’s beautiful and realistic portrayal of not just love, but humans in general!!
If you are left craving for more after finishing the first part – then fret not because this manga has a sequel titled Restart After Growing Hungry!
8. Snow Fairy
Author: Tomo Serizawa
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Tokyopop

A serene setting amidst the backdrop of snow, exquisite art, and a very wholesome story to go along with it. Well, Snow Fairy just has to be one of the best yaoi manga that came out in recent times!
Set in the snowy countryside of Hokkaido, it follows the story of Haruki Homura, a quiet young man living alone, and Akihito Narumi, a wildlife photographer who travels to Hokkaido to capture the elusive “snow fairies” on film.
When Haruki finds Akihito stranded and offers him a place to stay for the winter, the two slowly form a deep bond despite their contrasting personalities.
The manga’s art style perfectly complements its serene setting, and the narrative focuses on the slow development of Haruki and Akihito’s relationship. Honestly, the artwork alone is enough to make me recommend this manga twice over!
The emotional bonding between the two main characters is at the front and center of this one, and it should be perfect for anyone looking for a wholesome read!
9. I Cannot Reach You
Author: Mika
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Yen Press

This is a very sweet and wholesome story about two best friends who find it hard to communicate to each other how exactly they feel.
Yamato is the classic popular, handsome, and talented student, while Kakeru considers himself average and unremarkable. Despite their contrasting personalities, the two have always been inseparable.
However, as Kakeru starts to realize his romantic feelings for Yamato, he struggles with the fear that confessing could ruin their friendship forever.
Meanwhile, Yamato, though seemingly unaware, harbors his own complex emotions towards Kakeru, leading to a series of awkward, yet sweet interactions as they both try to navigate their feelings.
The premise is angst-y, however, trust me when I say this, the story indeed is wholesome. It has very little focus on the explicit and instead gear up for a slowburn development throughout the series.
Till now 7 volumes have been released by Yen Press, and the eighth one is lined up to come out soon!!
10. Cherry Magic: Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!
Author: Yuu Toyota
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Square Enix

This manga is actually a great workplace romance, very wholesome. Totally should be a part of this list. Preachy ain’t I?
Being a virgin for a long time has different outcomes depending on the type of people, but Kiyoshi was gifted a deadly power: the ability to read minds, only through physical touch.
Developing a hate for crowded places, his life changes when he accidentally hears the thoughts of a co-worker, Kurosawa.
Realizing that the admirable Kurosawa has always had romantic feelings for him, his heart starts to experience an unprecedented feeling.
Fluffy Yaoi with a touch of fantasy? Why not! As you read through this light-hearted manga, you will realize even grown-up men can act as children when it comes to love.
The recent anime adaptation has only helped the popularity of this beautiful manga soar even higher!
11. The Dragon’s Betrothed
Author: Meguru Hinohara
Status: Completed (2 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

The Dragon’s Betrothed might be a lesser known title when compared to the others in this list, however, it’s a yaoi manga that you should definitely not miss out on. If not anything, READ IT FOR HINOHARA’s ART!!
It is the second manga by Meguru Hinohara to be included in this list (the first being Therapy Game), and it follows the story of Chiharu Izunome, a struggling writer.
Chiharu returns to his rural hometown after his grandmother’s death. Little does he know, a childhood promise binds him to a local water dragon god named Rin.
Rin is disarmingly friendly and charming, but hides a powerful and potentially dangerous side.
Unlike Therapy Game, Hinohara doesn’t aim for too much smut in Dragon’s Betrothed, and instead focuses on the heartwarming relationship between the two main characters against the backdrop of a laid-back rural village.
There are plenty of cute and funny moments that take place between Rin and Chiharu, thanks to the latter’s unusual situation. However, this is also where Rin’s personality shines through a lot.
And as usual, Hinohara has blessed us with some amazing art!! So, what are you waiting for?
12. Ganbare! Nakamura Kun
Author: Syundei
Status: Completed (1 volume) + has a sequel
English Release: Seven Seas Entertainment

Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!! by Syundei is a delightful and humorous yaoi manga that revolves around Okuto Nakamura, a shy and socially awkward high school student who has a secret crush on his classmate, Hirose.
The story follows Nakamura’s clumsy attempts to get closer to Hirose while dealing with his own anxiety and self-doubt.
Despite his best efforts, Nakamura’s interactions with Hirose often end up in hilariously awkward situations, making it difficult for him to express his true feelings.
Syundei’s art and characterization make this manga a relaxing and easy-to-read story, fully satisfying the needs for a wholesome and light-hearted read.
A fair warning though – this yaoi title lacks concrete romantic development, as it is mainly focused on Nakamura’s efforts to grab the attention of his classmate!!
And the story doesn’t end here, as the sequel Motto Ganbare! Nakamura-kun!! continues the tale of his endeavors! The best part, an anime adaptation has been announced, so expect more copies of this manga to fly off the shelf!!

1. Twittering Birds Never Fly
Author: Kou Yoneda
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Digital Manga Publishing

The inclusion of Twittering Birds Never Fly in this list of Ultimate Yaoi manga shouldn’t be questioned in my honest opinion (look how brazen I am).
It might be underrated compared to a lot of other titles over here, however, it certainly has won its place among the critics – as it bagged a Sugoi Japan award in 2016.
You can guess it from the cover of the manga itself, but yeah, the plot of the manga is mature and deals with some complex emotions.
Yashiro, a young, powerful yakuza boss, is captivated by his new bodyguard, Doumeki. He gets off by teasing Doumeki and making him uncomfortable. Despite Yashiro’s advances, Doumeki remains stoic, harboring a secret of his own.
What’s interesting is that Yashiro is a masochist, while Doumeki is impotent. This should obviously have hampered the relationship between the two, however, that is not the case!
As their complex dynamic unfolds, they explore a love which isn’t traditional or by the book.
Kudos to author Kou Yoneda for creating such a dark masterpiece. However, I should give a fair warning – this story is not for everyone! It has a lot of triggering topics and if that’s not your cup of tea – please avoid this one!!
2. Ten Count
Author: Rihito Takarai
Status: Completed (6 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

Ten Count is one of the more popular titles on this list. It is a slow burn classic with some intense sensual scenes, and no doubt deserves a place in this list.
The manga follows the story of Shirotani, a young man with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and a crippling mysophobia (a fear of germs). This makes it difficult for him to function normally in life.
Enter Riku Kurose, an exposure therapy specialist who offers to help him. As Kurose guides Shirotani through a ten-step program to manage his OCD, their professional relationship gradually deepens into a complex and intimate bond.
As the core of the story revolves around the exposure therapy program, it involves a lot of physical closeness and feeling of being touched. Author Rihito Takarai manages to create an intimate atmosphere with a lot of angst and tension in her portrayal of Riku guiding Shirotani.
3. Crimson Spell
Author: Ayano Amane
Status: Completed (7 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

Next up, we have a classic from well known yaoi manga author Ayano Amane. Crimson Spell is a fantasy adventure yaoi with a decent amount of explicit scenes.
I had half a mind to include her Finder Series in the list before. However, Crimson Spell looked more appealing, thanks to it being a fantasy yaoi (one of the very few good ones out there)!!
The manga chronicles the story of Vald, a cursed prince who transforms into a raging demon at night, with Halvir, a powerful sorcerer. Halvir’s method of subduing the demon involves some very ahem specific tactics, which Vald is unaware of.
This non-consensual behavior might be a trigger for some of you, so be warned!
Stuck between a monstrous curse and a growing attraction to Halvir, Vald sets out on a journey to break the spell. Along the way, they gather loyal allies to fight the curse.
The art really makes the sensual scenes in the manga stand out. However, even if you pick up this manga for the ecchi content – you’ll end up staying for the plot of the manga.
If you liked Crimson Spell, you should definitely check out the author’s Finder series too!!
4. Midnight Rain
Author: CTK
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: SuBLime

The yaoi manga genre is often dominated by younger protagonists. But, it does have its fair share of older, mature couples (look at Twittering Birds). And even in that rarity, Midnight Rain somehow manages to be a refreshing read.
What makes Midnight Rain stand out? Perhaps it’s the sense that both protagonists—Ethan and Mike—are simply exhausted by life. Their world-weariness is what made the story a bit unique for me. I liked that vibe.
Ethan, burdened by the debt left behind by his deceased father, leads a monotonous life dominated by endless work to pay off his dues. One night, he encounters Mike, a mysterious man who appears at a local laundromat covered in wounds from a fight.
Ethan offers Mike a place to stay while he recovers. As they share a small apartment, their relationship evolves from mere cohabitation to something deeper and more passionate.
The manga effectively captures the complexity of adult relationships, where both Ethan and Mike are flawed and have a depth of character that makes their romance feel authentic and engaging.
5. Birds of Shangri-La
Author: Ranmaru Zariya
Status: Ongoing
English Release: SuBLime

Birds of Shangri-La has a fantastic story which I enjoyed. The only sad part is I don’t know when the fourth volume of the manga will be out. If not for that, I would definitely have placed it much higher on the list!!!
Based on a male brothel named Shangri-La, it is the story of Apollo, a straight man who joins the organization to earn some quick cash. The male workers here are referred to as “birds”, and the brothel owner puts his birds above everyone else.
Apollo’s drive to earn money ironically costs him, as he falls victim to Phi, the most sought-after member of the brothel. Phi’s eccentric nature causes Apollo to experience some of his weirdest moments as he tries to make sense of it all.
But as one goes deeper into the rabbit hole of this Yaoi Manga, it is certain that the themes discussed here are thought-provoking and even serious at times. What goes on in the minds of people while their bodies are doing something else is thoroughly portrayed here.
The change in Apollo’s thinking from being straight to someone who begins to understand Phi is a journey to behold, to say the least.
Ranmaru Zariya’s artwork really portrays emotions through facial expressions. It is steamy for sure, but the emotional journey is equally interesting and worth it.
6. I Didn’t Mean To Fall In Love
Author: Minta Suzumaru
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Fantasista Inc.

After Zariya’s heavy work, we have one that is fairly simple. If you are looking for a quick read and a BL plot that is not overly exaggerated, this is exactly what you need to read.
It is the story of Yoshino and Rou, who fall in love with each other after Yoshino meets Rou in a gay bar. You don’t have to worry about unnecessary drama or misunderstandings, as you read through the six chapters.
Keeping its simplicity in mind, there is nothing much to say other than its gorgeous art and a sense of affection for the boys. The realism is what makes it shine.
A short story can leave us unsatisfied so if you enjoyed reading this manga and want more content, the sequel I didn’t mean to fall in Love: Double awaits you with an equally compelling plot!
7. Under My Skin
Author: Iroha Usui
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Shu Cream

Under My Skin!!! Boy oh boy, this one is steamy for sure. A seven chapter ride through the story, and I can confidently say Iroha Usui knew what they were doing.
Mixers are a common theme for romance and it wasn’t any different for the likes of Kudou and Satou, who find themselves in a hotel room quicker than it took Kenshiro to Omae wa mou, Shindeiru Zeed.
Well, spicy action between men is what you crave and Under My Skin is full of it. There’s a lot of sensual activity, which makes it its biggest pro and con as well.
Sure, the dialogue offers depth but the story itself is nothing too special but if it is action that you are looking for, then this is for you!
The English Release is hard to find these days though!
8. Coyote
Author: Ranmaru Zariya
Status: Ongoing
English Release: SuBLime

Allow me to introduce you to the second of Ranmaru Zariya’s works in this list. Coyote, an ongoing series with a weird combo. BL and…werewolves! Well, its not complete furry.
To be honest, I love Birds of Shangri La more than Coyote. And that’s the only reason why it came above this in the list. It’s strictly a personal preference. You might love this one more, depending on your likes.
Coyote, our protagonist, doesn’t meddle with humans since he is a werewolf. But Marleen, later revealed to be a part of the esteemed Galland family, is borderline obsessed with him.
Without spoiling the plot too much, let’s say that despite the history of the characters, the two come close to each other eventually. Coyote is high on guard and doesn’t want to get too involved.
The depiction of London through the beautiful art has received its fair share of praise but in totality, the plot is going to keep you at the edge at all times!
9. MADK
Author: Ryo Suzuri
Status: Completed (3 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime

Muaaahahahahahahahahaha!
MADK is not for the faint hearted. I mean, it would be hard for you to even get past the first chapter. It’s aberrant if you want a fancy word – quite far from your typical yaoi romance!!
You definitely might be questioning my taste after reading this. But, you know, let’s leave room for some fantasy right?
This twisted and dark yaoi manga follows Makoto, a young man who harbors grotesque fetishes and is fascinated by cannibalism and death. Feeling disconnected from society due to his desires, he uses a summoning book to call forth Archduke J, a powerful demon.
Makoto’s request? To eat demon flesh. Shocked but intrigued, J grants the request, and a bizarre relationship begins. Well, the relationship begins with Makoto throat fuc….you know what, why don’t you read it and find out.
What makes MADK stand out in the yaoi genre is its unapologetic embrace of dark themes, from body horror to the psychological depth of characters who are driven by both desire and despair.
The art is another stand-out aspect of manga, with Suzuri perfectly capturing the emotions of the characters. But, the intense gore and non-consensual scenes might be too much for some readers. So, beware if you are of a faint heart!
10. Honto Yajuu (Like the Beast)
Author: Kotetsuko Yamamoto
Status: Ongoing
English Release: futekiya

Now, I had a hard time deciding where to include this particular title. Honto Yajuu is actually quite popular. It could even have made it to the classics list if I were a bit more biased.
However, I finally settled to include this in the steamy section, thanks to all the explicit scenes that keep popping down the line in the manga.
That said, Honto Yajuu is essentially a light-hearted yaoi manga that mixes romance, comedy, and the unexpected chemistry between two characters from very different worlds.
The story follows Tomoharu Ueda, a calm and gentle police officer, and Aki Gotouda, an eccentric and over-the-top yakuza heir. After a chance meeting during an underwear thief investigation, Aki immediately confesses his love for Ueda, setting the stage for their unusual romance.
Since its one of the longer manga in this list, rest assured, the romance aspect is well developed. And you’ll find plenty of drama too. But, humor is ever present in the story, and it is the character dynamics that actually make it fun read.
Like I said, more explicit scenes can be found in the later chapters. Coupled with Yamamoto’s art, these scenes are a treat for the eyes!!
11. Fourth Generation Head: Tatsuyuki Oyamoto
Author: Scarlet Beriko
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Renta!

Up next we have yet another yakuza theme yaoi manga, which is also quite intense (both in smut and its plot). However, it is quite short when compared to Twittering Bird, or Honto Yajuu.
Note: If you are familiar with Scarlet Beriko’s works, you might be wondering why I chose this one instead of say, Jackass or Jealousy. But, I liked this one a tad bit better than the others. Also, Jealousy is sort of a spin-off of this one. That said, you should definitely check out her other works!!
The story is basically a wild ride through the yakuza underworld, but with a dash of romance and a whole lot of heart. Tatsuyuki Ooyamato, a tough-as-nails yakuza heir who’s more at home in a brawl than in his own feelings.
His bizarre relationship with Nozomi Koga is a thing to behold, as the latter is revealed to have a deep affection for the Yakuza heir.
The plot features a sense of unpredictability where it is impossible to point out the true intentions of characters. Despite its smutty portrayal and twisted story, it evolves into a beautiful depiction of love.
It also features a lot of raw sensual scenes with brilliant art, making it one of the top reads if you are looking for smutty BL!
Hidden Gems/Bonus Suggestions:
Since you scrolled down (and hopefully read through) all the recommendations till now, I have a special section ready for you.
I’ve put together a bonus section of hidden gems that aren’t widely known but hold a special place in my heart. These BL titles might not be as popular, but each one offers something unique and memorable.
So, yeah, do check these out too!
1. Haruko Tooki Le (A Home Far Away)
Author: Teki Yatsuda
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Denpa

“If I were a woman, loving you wouldn’t be a sin.”
This quote alone is enough to give you a better idea as to what you can expect from this yaoi manga. It is a raw and honest portrayal of love and suffering, amid the backdrop of an ostracizing society.
Alan, a young man trapped in a fundamentalist upbringing, who meets Hayden, a free-spirited youth, during a dark period of his life.
Set in the winter of 1990, Alan finds himself lost and disillusioned, unable to find comfort either at home or through the church. His encounter with Hayden sparks a deep connection that challenges Alan’s beliefs and disrupts his controlled existence.
As Hayden, who is carrying around his own baggage, decides to leave town one day, Alan goes with him. And thus begins their journey of self-discovery and liberation, pushing them both to confront his innermost fears and desires.
The manga has melancholy written all over it from the very start. By the time you are done with this, you’ll be left searching for those tissues!!
2. One Room Angel
Author: Harada
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Fantasista Inc.

Now, One Room Angel is a work that is very close to me, and something that I was intent on gatekeeping for a very long time. However, I think it would be futile to not let you know of this beautiful beautiful story out there.
This doesn’t exactly qualify to be a BL manga, as the romance is pretty much non-existent. But we believe in heavy subtexts, don’t we? Yes we do!!
Similar to other works of author Harada, One Room Angel carries a sense of tragedy, yet it also offers a unique sense of optimism.
The plot centers on Kouki, a disillusioned middle-aged man who has hit rock bottom. With no hobbies, friends, or purpose, Kouki is left feeling empty and devoid of any will to live.
After a violent encounter leaves him seriously injured, he has a surreal vision of an “angel” who saves his life.
When he wakes up, he finds the angel in his one-room apartment, amnesiac and unable to return to heaven. As they begin to live together, a unique bond forms between them.
While reading the manga I missed the fact that the story is actually quite dark – thanks to how well Harada balances the themes of depression, suicidal ideation, and existential despair—with moments of warmth, humor, and unexpected optimism.
One Room Angel is definitely a standout in this genre and you should surely pick this one up!! It has prompted me to check out more of Harada’s works. I’ll keep you guys updated on that if possible.
3. The Summer Hikaru Died
Author: Mokumokuren
Status: Ongoing
English Release: Yen Press

The Summer Hikaru Died has gained recent popularity due to the announcement of its anime adaptation.
However, I’d wager that it remains relatively unknown compared to its peers, And so, it finds itself in the hidden gems/bonus suggestions of our Ultimate yaoi manga list.
The story revolves around two close friends, Yoshiki and Hikaru, living in a rural village. One day, Hikaru mysteriously disappears into the mountains, only to return as a different entity—something that looks and sounds like Hikaru but isn’t.
Haunted by the loss of his friend and the eerie presence that has taken Hikaru’s place, Yoshiki grapples with the strange events unfolding around him.
Now, just like One Room Angel, The Summer Hikaru Died won’t exactly qualify to be an out and out yaoi manga. However, the sexual tension between the characters is quite evident and boy, the horror BL element is something unique.
Despite the upcoming anime adaptation, I highly recommend reading the manga. There are five volumes available now btw.
4. Stigmata: Love Bites
Author: Hidebu Takahashi
Status: Completed (2 volumes)
English Release: SuBLime (pretty new)

Stigmata is primarily a detective manga with a crazy amount of blood, gore and trauma inducing elements. However, there’s also a developing romance in the story.
Stigmata: Love Bites is a revival of Hidebu Takahashi’s original work. In Love Bites, she has added more elements of BL, making it a good fit for yaoi connoisseurs.
The manga follows the story of Minami Asako, a detective with a unique ability—he can experience the final moments of murder victims, even manifesting their wounds on his own body.
Asako works alongside the reserved Superintendent Kuroiwa, and together they tackle complex murder cases. The plot intensifies when they are assigned to investigate the murder of Kuroiwa’s ex-wife, Mari.
Interestingly, Mari’s last thoughts before she died were of Kuroiwa. And since Asako could also experience them, he too has some kind of an intense reaction to it.
And so begins his inner turmoil of understanding whether the emotions he is experiencing are truly his, or are they of the victim Mari.
The art style is kinda quirky, but easy to get used to. However, I’ll give full points to the premise and how well Takahashi handles her characters.
5. No Touching At All
Author: Kou Yoneda
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Digital Manga Publishing

Ahh yes, the second Kou Yoneda work in our list. While Twittering Birds Never Fly is her more popular work, you might find some arguing that No Touching At All is actually much better than that.
I don’t want to give any verdict on it, because I feel both have very distinctive vibes to it.
No Touching at all is more of a heartfelt story. It doesn’t have the dark undertones of Twittering Birds. However, it doesn’t make it any less hitting.
The story begins with Shima, a shy, introverted man starting a new job. On his first day, he finds himself trapped in an elevator with Togawa, a hungover stranger who turns out to be his new boss.
As their professional relationship progresses, Shima finds himself drawn to Togawa’s warm yet straightforward demeanor, despite his initial hesitation due to a past failed romance.
The plot is similar to your usual yaoi ones. However, Yoneda shines in how well the story is executed.
Both our protagonists are shaped by their painful pasts, and their journey together is one of healing and self-discovery. Their romance oozes natural, free from the typical over-dramatization.
Instead, their bond develops gradually, rooted in genuine emotional connection and vulnerability, making it feel both authentic and relatable.
6. Touch Within the Abyss
Author: Moyori Mori
Status: Completed (1 volume)
English Release: Shu Cream

When one of your protagonists is a killer and the other is a blind man, it is natural that manga will have somewhat of a dark theme.
However, in Touch Within the Abyss, author Moyori Mori manages to balance out the darker elements which come as a part of its setting, with an equal amount of emotional and heavy hitting development, making it a great read.
The manga tells the story of Chinatsu, a hitman haunted by his traumatic past, and Kasumi, a lonely blind boy who once offered him solace. Years after their fateful encounter, the two are reunited under tragic circumstances, and a delicate relationship begins to form.
As Chinatsu struggles with his inability to kill, he finds himself inexplicably drawn to Kasumi, whose calm and kindness bring him a sense of peace.
The manga does a great job in exploring the emotional complexities of two broken individuals who find comfort in each other’s presence.
It has delicately portrayed the effects of psychological trauma, which Chinatsu goes through and his redemption truly is a standout aspect of the series! Must read in my opinion!
