Have you ever woken up feeling like you were in the wrong body? In gender bender manga, that’s not just a feeling – it’s the entire premise!
This genre throws a wild curveball at its characters, often the protagonist, by suddenly swapping their genders.
While the body swap scenario is a somewhat common theme (think classic titles like Ranma ½ and even Your Name. movie), the manga in this genre don’t employ this theme just for the laughs.
They explore characters who may question their true gender identity or challenge traditional gender roles altogether.
The resulting stories can be heartwarming, or dramatic, or sometimes downright hilarious. So, buckle up and get ready to experience the world from a different perspective!
In this article, we’ll be diving into the best gender bender manga out there: some ecchi, some funny and some that delve deep into the human psyche and probably make you uncomfortable.
15. Ayakashi Triangle:
Author: Kentaro Yabuki
Status: Completed (16 volumes)

Let’s start off this list of best gender bender manga with Ayakashi Triangle, which gained a lot of fame recently.
The plot follows Matsuri Kazamaki, a ninja exorcist, protecting his childhood friend Suzu Kanade, a medium who attracts ayakashi spirits.
As a 400 year ‘King of Ayakashi’ (in the form of a talking cat named Shirogane) tries to devour Suzu, Matsuri swoops in to save the day. However, Shirogane turns Matsuri into a girl to stop him from sealing away his powers.
Now a girl, Matsuri continues to protect Suzu, adjusting to his new body and the challenges it brings. Also, there is romance brewing – yuri fans rejoice!
The gender bender aspect is mostly there for comedy, otherwise it is totally ignored. Instead, the focus is on the mini-adventures the cast have and also the interesting fight sequences that accompany it.
To be honest, the plot is quite episodic and cliched at times – with a good amount of ecchi content. In fact, it had to shift magazines in order to avoid censorship of its content.
Even so, Ayakashi Triangle is a good manga to pick-up for those who are new to the genre. It is fast paced, and manages to stay fresh throughout its duration!
14. Fukigen Cinderella:
Author: Wataru Murayama
Status: Completed (3 volumes)

Fukigen Cinderella follows Haruhiko, an ordinary guy with a not-so-ordinary twist. Haruhiko is someone who hates girls. However, when he encounters three witches on a particular day, they cast a spell on him, causing him to transform into a girl every day at noon!
By midnight, he’s back to his normal self. As someone who did not value the opposite gender, Haruhiko is confused and frustrated as he tries to grapple with this strange new life.
Fukigen Cinderella falls in the spectrum of bizarre and weird. However, it is still a title recommended regularly when it comes to gender bender manga. The story has all the elements of a psychological drama, and author Wataru Murayama took the opportunity to portray the horrors that women have to face, something that Haruhiko was blind to.
To be honest, this one is a hit or miss. Not everyone’s cup of tea, as it has some graphic scenes and triggering elements littered here and there. However, it is still an interesting read, especially due to Haruhiko’s character development. Side characters? Meh.
13. Tensei Pandemic:
Author: Nabe Fuyuno
Status: Completed (10 volumes)

Till now, we have seen gender bender manga in which the main character and sometimes a set of others swap or change their gender/sex. However, Tensei Pandemic is a bit different from them.
It manages to present you with a steady stream of boys and girls whose genders have been swapped thanks to a virus that our protagonist unknowingly got infected with.
The plot follows Hinata Imamura, a feminine high school boy with a desire to be more masculine. However, he wakes up one day to discover he’s a girl? Nope! He transforms after he takes a mysterious drug from a even more mysterious person in a shady lab!
This strange phenomenon isn’t limited to him, as it has the ability to spread like a pandemic when he kisses someone.
And so follows a series of hilarious and ecchi moments where Hinata gets kissed, or people “come in contact” with Hinata’s lips in outrageous ways. It’s preferable to keep logic aside and enjoy this one.
On top of that, Hinata also has to balance the romantic interests that have popped up in his life.
Don’t get into this one expecting major character development or a dramatic phase of the main character going through to gender identity crisis. That said, it’s not like shies away from touching upon some important aspects of gender change.
Overall, Tensei Pandemic is a good gender bender rom-com to have in your shelf!
12. Yamada-kun & the Seven Witches:
Author: Miki Yoshikawa
Status: Completed (28 volumes)

Yamada-kun and the seven witches is probably the first title to come to mind when people think of gender bender manga, that’s how popular it is.
The plot follows Ryu Yamada, a high school delinquent, accidentally falls on top of Urara Shiraishi, the school’s top student. This leads to a surprising body swap.
This leads them to discover a legend about seven witches at their school, each with unique powers activated by a kiss. Yamada and Shiraishi, along with the Supernatural Studies Club, embark on a quest to uncover the identities of the remaining witches.
Instead of focusing on the issues faced after swapping gender, author Miki Yoshikawa makes the story lean more towards humor and romance. The body swapping offers a good pretext for interesting shenanigans and escapades.
It’s a fun read overall, though the plot might not seem strong at points. The manga also has its ecchi elements, if you are one to love those!!
11. Onimai: I Am Now Your Sister:
Author: Nekotofu
Status: Ongoing

What happens when you have a mad scientist sister who no longer wants you to be a shut in? She transforms you into a high-school girl. That’s exactly what happened to Onimai’s protagonist Mahiro Oyama.
Despite the bizarre gender change, Mahiro is determined to go back to his shut in life. However, his sister has other plans for him.
Determined to study her brother in his new form, Mihari turns Mahiro’s life upside down. As Mahiro struggles to adapt to his new body and figure out a way to reverse the process, he’s forced to confront his sister’s obsessive curiosity and the awkwardness of their newfound sibling relationship.
Onimai is a gender bender manga which falls under the Cute Girls Doing Cute Things category. The manga is quite wholesome to be honest. And even though the issue of gender change is handled quite subtly, the focus is more on Mahiro’s shut-in nature and how he slowly grows out of it by making new acquaintances in life.
True, the idea of an 20-year-old being surrounded by high school girls does border on the Mushoku Tensei level weird, and yes- there is a generous amount of fanservice. However, if you manage to look past that, then we have a cute and relaxing read in our hands.
Once again, this is manga that feels quite fresh within the gender bender genre and is something I would recommend for you to read!
10. Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl:
Author: Satoru Akahori (Story), Yukimaru Katsura (Illustrated)
Status: Completed (5 volumes)

Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl is a gender bender manga that is unique in its own rights. It’s a classic romance manga which will keep you on the edge with its love triangle. But the best part is that its falls into the yuri demographic.
The plot follows Hazumu, a high school boy, who gets rejected by his crush, Yasuna at the start. Heartbroken, he climbs a mountain where an alien spaceship crashes on him! Revived by the alien, Hitoshi, Hazumu returns to life, but with a shocking twist – he’s now a girl!
As Hazumu adjusts to his new life, things get complicated. Yasuna, who can’t “see men” differently, suddenly confesses her love for him (her). Meanwhile, Hazumu’s childhood friend, the tomboyish Tomari, also develops feelings for our MC.
Even the love triangle developing, the story actually deals with the gender shift pretty well, and also manages to stay fresh even with some cliched elements included here and there. I actually liked Hazumu a lot, especially the way he dealt with the transformation.
If you are looking for a good gender bender manga that is sweet, melodramatic and also quite healthy – I suggest you for this one! I am purposely not talking about the aliens from the initial chapters!
9. Boku Girl:
Author: Akira Sugito
Status: Completed (11 volumes)

Up next, we once again have a gender bender manga with a decent amount of ecchi in it. But don’t let that dissuade you, because it does, in its own way, focus on the turmoils that the main character goes through after a gender swap.
The plot follows Mizuki Suzushiro, who like Hinata from Tensei Pandemic, is a boy who’s insecure about his feminine appearance. After a wish in front of a special mirror, he is transformed into a girl by the mischievous god Loki.
Mizuki must now navigate life as a girl, dealing with the challenges and unexpected consequences of this transformation.
A commendable part of Boku Girl is how it focuses on Mizuki’s identity. He is someone who has leaned towards the feminine, but he still wishes to be a boy to pursue his romantic interest.
This sets Mizuki apart from the other protagonists you might have encountered in gender bender, and is an aspect that’s handled quite well by the author, though the over sexualization could have been toned down.
At points I found the comedy to be very cliched – the ones you to find in this genre. But still, the manga proves to be an enjoyable read and rightly gets included in my list of best Gender Bender manga.
8. Kokoro Connect:
Author: Sadanatsu Anda (Original Story), CUTEG (art)
Status: Completed (5 volumes)

Kokoro Connect is one of the popular gender-bender manga in this list due to its anime adaptation.
The plot focuses on five high-school friends at Yamahoshi Academy who come together to form the Cultural Research Club.
The lives of these friends are turned upside down when a supernatural being, Heartseed, interferes and causes them to swap bodies with each other randomly.
Unlike some gender-bender stories, Kokoro Connect leans into the shoujo genre, focusing on the dramatic impact of these unexpected switches.
Thanks to body swapping, the friends are forced to confront each other’s deepest fears and hidden insecurities. As secrets spill and tensions rise, they find themselves navigating a whirlwind of emotions and awkward situations.
The interactions between the characters were very heavy on dialogues for me, probably because it was adapted from a light novel. However, prepare yourselves for an angsty read!
On a side note though – the story is more fleshed out in the Light Novel, which has over 90 chapters. So if you are light novel reader in general, I highly suggest that you read the original source material!
7. Ranma ½:
Author: Rumiko Takahashi
Status: Completed (38 volumes)

Ahem…RANMA’S HAIR IS BLACK EVEN AFTER HE TRANSFORMS!!
Ranma 1/2 is often credited with popularizing the gender bender genre in manga and anime. The series’ lighthearted and humorous approach made the concept more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience.
What I am trying to say is – do not expect to see any serious themes in this one. Ranma ½ is perfect for a laidback read with lots of laughs.
The plot follows Ranma Saotome, a skilled martial artist, who accidentally falls into a cursed spring during a training trip in China.
The curse causes him to transform into a girl whenever splashed with cold water, while hot water changes him back to a boy.
Back in Japan, Ranma discovers that he is engaged to Akane Tendo, a girl he barely knows. Their relationship is complicated by Ranma’s transformations, Akane’s fiery temper, and the constant interference of other characters.
Together, Ranma, Akane, and their friends and rivals embark on a series of comedic adventures, searching for a way to break Ranma’s curse while dealing with the chaos caused by their frequent transformations.
The situational comedy might seem cliched in this one. But then let’s not forget that Ranma ½ was the one that served as an inspiration to many creators. This is the og!
6. Cheeky Angel:
Author: Hiroyuki Nishimori
Status: Completed (20 volumes)

This is the story of how guy who wished to be a manliest of man faced the gender bender curse and turned into the most gorgeous woman out there. An angel, as the title suggests.
Megumi Amatsuka is a popular and beautiful girl with a secret: she used to be a boy! After meddling with a book of curses, Megumi’s body changed, and she’s now living life as a girl. Nope, not a fantasy manga!
Thanks to her appearance, she ends up attracting a lot of attention (think Komi-san). While she adjusts to her new identity, she still loves fighting and has a tomboyish personality. Dealing with the constant attention while also trying to find a way to revert her gender forms the crux of the story!
Having released in 1999 – it does the same old thing of using the body swap to create situational comedy. Oi dork, why is this ranking so high you ask! Well, the point is, I feel there are some interesting themes in this that goes beyond a fun filled tropey gender bender manga.
Just like Ranma 1/2, it is filled with action and some hilarious comedy sequences. However, the more I read, the more I felt that the author maybe wanted this to be a commentary on gender conformity.
There are several instances where Megumi is expected to behave in a certain way, and obviously most of the times he does punch, kick and roll away in style from these. However, at times he finds himself confused thanks to the gender swap.
Though not very pronounced, I really liked these instances and the manga was overall a great read. If you loved Ranma 1/2 you’ll definitely love this one too!
5. Kanojo Ni Naru Hi:
Author: Akane Ogura
Status: Completed (4 volumes)

Kanojo Ni Haru Hi is set in a unique world where the male to female ratio remains fixed thanks to a gender shifting mechanism.
And this mechanism adds a gender-bender twist in the lives of best friends Nao and Kyosuke. When he turns 17, the dominant Nao comes down with a sickness and returns transformed as a woman.
Kyosuke, who is terrified of women, is dismayed by this change, however, Nao accepts his fate and tries to adjust to this new life.
Once again, the effect of gender swap here is permanent. However, this one doesn’t delve deep into the psychological aspects of a gender swap. It instead chooses to focus more on the romantic and sexual tensions between the main characters.
Nao has more or less accepted his new identity, as we see her being confident about her new body and the changes that ensued. In fact, it is Kyosuke who is shown to bear the brunt of the change.
This gender-bender manga is quite an enjoyable read and definitely deserves a place in this list! If you liked this one, also check out Kanojo Ni Naru Hi: Another, which is set in the same universe!
4. Just Like Mona Lisa:
Author: Tsumuji Yoshimura
Status: Completed (9 volumes)

Just Like Mona Lisa is a peculiar manga even within the gender bender sphere because it doesn’t really have a character who swaps their gender.
Instead, the plot focuses on Hinase Arima, who has to choose between being a boy or a girl before time runs out.
In a world of self-chosen genders, 18-year-old Hinase is a blank canvas. Unlike everyone else who transformed into their desired genders at 12, Hinase remains blissfully genderless, content with their childhood friends: Ritsu and Shiori.
But their carefree days are numbered. when both Ritsu and Shiori confess their feelings on the same day!
Overwhelmed with newfound love and the pressure to choose a gender, Hinase embarks on a journey of self-discovery that goes beyond the predefined roles.
Let me tell you why I included this title in this list. While other gender bender manga usually involve a character’s gender/sex changing in the first chapter itself, The Gender of Mona Lisa is like different take on that according to me.
The main character is forced to choose a gender in order to survive, and this brings about a lot of questions about what Hinase would be comfortable with.
This manga is not without its flaws to be honest. It might leave you with some lingering questions and some frustrating moments.
However, I still feel that Yoshimura has made a great attempt at questioning the gender conformity and also to portray a romance that transcends gender. The handling of Hinase, who is non-binary, is not a hundred percent satisfactory, so yeah, that’s there.
A special mention goes out to author Yoshimura’s art in the manga too!
P.S. The manga has two ‘routes’ at the end, depending on Hinase’s choice. Make sure to read them both.
3. Inside Mari:
Author: Shuzo Oshimi
Status: Completed (9 volumes)

The one thing we can be sure to find in Shuzo Oshimi stories is the dark psychological drama element, and Inside Mari doesn’t disappoint in that aspect!
College was a shipwreck for our protagonist Isao Komori. He clung to the dream of making friends, but his only companion was loneliness, which eventually led him to drop out.
As he spent his days in a suffocating sense of alienation, a beautiful high school girl, Mari, who frequented the convenience store he visited became his ray of hope.
One day as he stalks her from a distance, their eyes meet, and not knowing what happened, Komori wakes up in Mari’s body.
Inside Mari surely is a disturbing tale, where a distraught Komori tries to keep his new life from falling apart completely. It comes with some interesting twists and developments that leave the characters deranged.
If you are a fan of Oshimi’s works, then this is indeed one of the best gender-bender manga you’ll ever read!
2. Shishunki Bitter Change:
Author: Masayoshi
Status: Completed (9 volumes)

For some reason, I assumed that Shishunki Bitter Change Manga will have a gag or a humorous premise. I couldn’t have been more wrong. This gender-bender manga deals with quite serious themes, subtle though it may seem.
Now, in some of the previous titles I listed, the phenomenon of body swapping was not permanent. The characters eventually do return to their original bodies or they atleast have a possibility of returning.
However, in Shishunki Bitter Change, that doesn’t happen.
Yuuta and Yui, elementary school classmates, accidentally happen to switch bodies after the former crashlands on the latter. They continue living in each other’s bodies hoping for the situation to resolve itself.
But, as they go through their lives, things only start getting complex, especially as puberty hits.
Now, this is not the only manga where the effects of gender swapping are prolonged. However, I feel that in Shishunki Bitter Change, the author has managed to capture the horrors of gender dysphoria.
The nuanced portrayal of adolescence and the emotional realism this manga hits you with, makes it one of the best gender bender manga out there!
1. Ore Ga Watashi ni Naru Made:
Author: Satou Hatsuki
Status: Ongoing

Taking the top spot in this list of best gender manga is a title that is underrated and lesser known. Ore Ga Watashi Ni Naru Made (Until I become me) can be shrugged off as a cliched title based on its premise, but trust me, its way more than that.
The plot follows Akira, a troubled boy with a history of being abusive towards girls. He wakes up one day to find himself transformed into a girl! Believing his body will eventually change back, Akira struggles to adapt to his new reality.
Akira transforms at the age of 7. And from that point, we see him grow, evolve and coming to terms with who he really has become. As the title of the manga suggests – its a story of Akira becoming himself (herself).
This manga can be seen in the same vein as Shishunki Bitter Change, where the main character’s gender dysphoria is explored. But, the major change is that it is done here in a more nuanced way.
It takes the topic seriously, despite the laid back tone and appearance. The way Akira refuses to let go of his male persona and finds it hard to adjust to is well portrayed.
The author also questions traditional gender roles. This is a commentary on how a person’s gender need not define their actions, likes or dislikes.
The art in the initial chapters is a bit rough around the edges, however it improves as the series progresses. Overall, I’d say this is a beautiful piece of work from Hatsuki Satou and something you should definitely pick up and read!
Which of the above gender bender manga do you plan on picking up and reading? Let me know in the comments below!!
