Chainsmoker Cat, also known as Yani Neko, manga is getting a reprint of all existing volumes following strong demand sparked by its anime, which began airing in July.

The reprinted volumes will begin arriving at bookstores after Aug 19, with another batch scheduled to arrive next month.

The Young Magazine editorial department announced that it had received numerous reports of the manga selling out at bookstores following the anime’s debut.

Due to the tremendous response to the Yani Neko TV anime, we have received many reports that the manga is sold out at bookstores, so we have decided to reprint all volumes,” the department stated.

The editor-in-chief also commented on the anime’s reception, noting that the series has received an incredible response and that stocks of the original manga are running low. The editor thanked readers and viewers for embracing the series’ characters and recalled that the decision to serialize Chainsmoker Cat was made three years ago.

The Yani Neko anime has received an incredible response, and stocks of the original manga are running low! We are grateful to all the readers and viewers who welcomed these truly filthy characters. Three years ago, I’m glad we immediately decided to serialize Yani’s story. We hope you will continue to support Yani Neko and Nyan Nyan Factory-sensei. (From Kazushi of Kodansha).

The strong demand comes despite the anime generating considerable controversy since its premiere.

In Japan, some viewers reportedly dropped the series after its first episode because of its graphic depiction of nicotine addiction, overflowing garbage and unsanitary living conditions.

The series’ deliberately unpleasant portrayal has nevertheless prompted some viewers to look beyond its crude humor, with discussions focusing on its depiction of poverty, depression, anxiety and the difficulty of escaping addiction.

The controversy has also reached outside Japan. The Chainsmoker Cat anime was recently removed from a streaming service in Hong Kong after the program was found to violate the city’s restrictions on online smoking advertisements.

Chainsmoker Cat manga by Nyan Nyan Factory is currently serialized in Weekly Young Magazine. As of Aug 6, 2026, thirteen volumes have been released.

The anime adaptation, produced by Bibury Animation Studios, started airing on July 3, 2026.

Seven Seas Entertainment, which licenses the manga in English, describes the plot as:

Yani is a catgirl with a seriously bad smoking habit. She smokes so much that her apartment smells like ash and is littered with cigarette butts—and plenty of other trash! Every time she tries to quit, she becomes weak to the cravings and gives in almost instantly. Will she ever get her life together, or is she doomed to live as a chainsmoking slob forever?
