One Piece Anime’s Original Cast Set To Reprise Roles For Japanese Dub Of Netflix’s Live-Action Adaptation

It was announced during Anime Expo 2023 that the original Japanese voice actors will be returning to portray their iconic characters for the Japanese dub of the upcoming One Piece live-action adaptation.

One Piece Live Action

  • Mayumi Tanaka as Monkey D. Luffy
  • Kazuya Nakai as Roronoa Zoro
  • Akemi Okamura as Nami
  • Kappei Yamaguchi as Usopp
  • Hiroaki Hirata as Sanji

Mayumi Tanaka expressed her excitement on being able to voice Luffy for the adaption stating, “I’ve been voicing Luffy for more than 23 years now, and I think everyone has a little bit of Luffy in their heart. Iñaki, who performs Luffy in this live-action series, is so fun and joyful that he really makes a perfect Luffy! I’m very happy to be able to voice Luffy in this adaptation as well. ONE PIECE is a story whose words and images can resonate with you in different ways depending on your situation or perspective at any given moment, allowing for new discoveries all the time. And of course, nothing would bring me greater joy than if people who’ve never experienced ONE PIECE can become part of the family beginning with this show“.

Fans who attended the expo were also treated to an exclusive video presentation. The video showcased Mayumi Tanaka, the original voice actress of Monkey D. Luffy, welcoming Iñaki Godoy, the actor who will be portraying Luffy in the live-action series, by gifting him Luffy’s iconic straw hat.

One Piece Live Action

One Piece live-action will release on Aug 31, 2023, exclusively on Netflix.

The One Piece live-action cast includes Iñaki Godoy, who portrays Monkey D. Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar will play Sanji. Colton Osorio will portray a young Luffy.

Furthermore, Peter Gadiot will play Shanks, Morgan Davies as Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino as Alvida, Aidan Scott as Helmeppo, Jeff Ward as Buggy, McKinley Belcher III as Arlong, and Vincent Regan as Garp.

The other cast members include:

  • Alexander Maniatis as Klahadore
  • Steven Ward as Mihawk
  • Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff
  • Langley Kirkwood as Captain Morgan
  • Celeste Loots as Kaya
  • Chioma Umeala as Nojiko

Eiichiro Oda had previously stated that the live-action series won’t be launched until he was satisfied.

It was also revealed earlier that the live-action adaptation won’t be a carbon copy of the original work.

The live action adaptation was under production in South Africa since Feb 1, 2022.

The live-action will be adapting the East-Blue Saga from the One Piece manga and then “broaden from there”. Matt Owens will serve as the upcoming show’s writer, while Steven Maeda and Becky Clements will be executive producers along with Eiichiro Oda.

Netflix will exclusively stream the series, produced by Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between producer Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios.

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump since July 1997, with its individual chapters compiled into 105 tankobon volumes as of March 2023.
