Netflix’s One Piece Live Action Won’t Be A Carbon Copy Of The Anime

The series is being compared to the Marvel Cinematic universe how it adapted its characters.

Ever since Netflix announced it’s live action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga, fans have been eager to know how faithful the show will stay to the source material.

And according to recent reports, the live-action adaptation won’t be a carbon copy of the original work.

Nicole Hirsch Whittaker, the cinematographer of the upcoming series, is familiar with the source material. Not only has she read the manga to her son, he also has caught up on over 1000+ episodes of the One Piece anime.

In the numerous back and forth collaborations that she had with the showrunners/director, they came to the conclusion that they wanted the One Piece live action series to stand out on its own rather than being a carbon copy.

She compares this to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has an enormous audience and has done an excellent job to adapt the characters to “fit the culture of the day”.

“There will always be fans and critics. You can’t please everyone but at the heart of it, the most important thing is the story. And if the story isn’t there, and that doesn’t grab the viewers, it doesn’t matter what you do. We can only hope that we’re going to gain a new audience and people that find it fascinating and interesting,” Nicole said.

However, given the fact that Oda is serving as an executive producer, and Shueisha is one of the production companies involved in the series along with Tomorrow Studios, fans can be assured of the plot being in safe hands.

The live action adaptation was under production in South Africa since Feb 1, 2022. It wrapped up shoot recently and bid its cast goodbye.
