New One Piece Anime Film’s Production Is Not Going Well, Oda Reveals

One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, as usual, had a special message for attendees of the One Piece stage panel at this year’s Jump Festa. However, his message gave a disappointing update about the franchise’s new anime film.

In his message, Oda noted that no one told him that he was allowed to talk about the new anime film. However, he still went on to reveal that the production for the film was not going particularly well.

As for the new film – they haven’t said I am allowed to say this – I can’t say its going particularly well,” Oda’s message read.

The author jokingly said that he revealed this disappointing update in hopes that it “will light a fire under everyone.” He further noted that the film was about something that everyone would be “very interested” in, and asked fans to patiently wait for future updates.

It needs to be seen if Oda’s public statement about the schedule will spur the production team into action. All major details regarding the new anime film are still under the wraps.

While Oda’s message confirms that a new One Piece film is in production, hints about the movie were dropped at the previous Jump Festa in the author’s message.

Back then, Oda had noted that he would be giving his all to “the manga, the anime, the films, and live-action!! And so the team is lining up various projects and announcements for One Piece next year.” This led many to believe that a movie was in the works.

While One Piece movies are usually non-canon and have an original story, some fans were hoping that the new movie bucks the trend and instead adapts the storyline from the manga. This would be in line with the recent wave of anime movies that have dominated the global box office, including ones from the Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man franchise.

The last anime film in the One Piece franchise was One Piece Film: Red, which focused on a singer named Uta who claimed to be Shanks’ daughter. It was highest grossing anime film in the franchise, earning over USD 246 million worldwide. It is also the 7th highest grossing Japanese film of all time globally.

There are total of 15 theatrical anime films in the One Piece franchise, all produced by Toei Animation. The movies have been helmed by iconic directors, including Mamoru Hosoda, Goro Taniguchi, the late Tatsuya Nagamine and others.

In addition to the update about the new film, the One Piece panel at Jump Festa also revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Elbaf arc of the anime, which will release in 2026.
