Fans of Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail have a reason to celebrate, as it has been revealed that the manga is set to return with a new story as part of its 20th-anniversary.

Starting August 5, 2026, Mashima will begin publishing a new Fairy Tail mini-series in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. The manga is returning nine years after its original run ended in 2017.

The author stated that the new story will once again feature Natsu Dragneel and his friends as they go on a new adventure, however, it will focus on an “unexpected character.” Further details regarding the plot of the new series and for how long it will run are still under wraps.

This move is similar to the short-term serialization that Gege Akutami did with the Jujutsu Kaisen manga for its sequel story.

A new commemorative video was released on the magazine’s official YouTube channel to celebrate the new serialization. The video features the popular theme song “Snow Fairy” by FUNKIST, which was originally used in the Fairy Tail anime.

The author said that he was tearing up after listening to the song in the PV.

As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, other projects too have been announced, which includes an autograph session with Mashima, being held across Japan and even in international venues. Additionally, a special 20th anniversary art exhibition will also be held across the country in various cities.

More details regarding the anniversary celebrations can be found on the official website.

Mashima started serializing Fairy Tail manga in August 2006 in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine. It ran for 545 chapters, concluding its run in the magazine in 2017. The chapters of the manga were collected into 63 volumes.

The manga has over 72 million copies in circulation, and has been adapted into anime by A-1 Pictures in collaboration with other studios. There are three seasons of the anime in total, along with multiple anime films and OVAs too.

A sequel series, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest is currently serializing in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket app, and has published 23 volumes. Mashima provides the storyboards for the series, with Atsuo Ueda handling the illustrations.
