New details have emerged about the extensive production timeline for the Witch Hat Atelier anime, revealing the project has been in development for much longer than fans realized.
The new information was shared in a “From producer” segment on Kodansha’s official Instagram account, where one of the producers of Witch Hat Atelier stated that the project to create an anime of the manga has been in progress since 2019.
They explained that the long timeline is necessary to figure out how to transform the manga’s extremely intricate illustrations into an anime.
This means that the plans to produce the anime were well underway even before Bug Films, which is animating Witch Hat Atelier, was even established. The animation studio was founded in 2021.
The producers also revealed that they consult with series author Kamome Shirahama on the fine details of the magic system, determining how a single manga panel of a spell is expanded with color, movement and visual flair for the screen.
“In scenes where magic is cast, even if it’s expressed in the manga as a single panel showing the character suddenly enveloped in light, in the anime, it’s necessary to add things like color and movement. Each time, we consult with the author about the fine details of the magic, figuring out how it’s activated, what phenomena is produced, and how we can make the visual stand out on the screen.“
The producers also elaborated on their grand ambitions for the series, setting a remarkably high bar for the final product, saying they want to create something profound like Lord of the Rings.
“We want to create something akin to a Hollywood blockbuster. Something profound like the Lord of the Rings,” the producer said.
This would explain why the anime’s broadcast schedule has been pushed from 2025 to 2026. In the official notice, the production committee apologized for the postponement, stating the decision was made “in order to deliver the series with the highest possible quality and to fully showcase its charm.”
At the end of their interview, the producers expressed a desire to craft an anime that lets “children and adults alike become immersed in the fantasy genre” and hopes the visuals will attract a global audience to the world of Witch Hat Atelier.
