Vinland Saga Author Confirms Season 3 Is Not In Progress In Disappointing Update

Makoto Yukimura, the creator of Vinland Saga, has confirmed that a third season of the anime adaptation is not currently in production.

Yukimura addressed the status of Vinland Saga Season 3 on Oct. 22, 2026, in a direct reply to a fan on X, who asked whether there was any positive news concerning a third installment.

Yukimura responded directly, apologising that he had “no good news” about the project, and that is is “not currently in progress.”

The author was answering fan queries on social media following high volume of fan mail sent to Kodansha.

It is worth noting that this update is not to be taken as the third season being cancelled or shelved.

Despite recurring speculation online, Vinland Saga Season 3 has never received a formal announcement or production greenlight.

Fan expectations initially surged following the conclusion of Season 2 in June 2023, when chief animation director Takahiko Abiru shared celebratory artwork featuring the Roman numeral “III” alongside the phrase “Thorfinn’s journey will continue.”

Staff members, however, later clarified that the post was not to be treated as an official announcement.

Similar rumors circulated in January 2026, which prompted Yukimura to state on social media that no information regarding a continuation had reached him.

The latest update comes amid an long wait surrounding the sequel series. Vinland Saga, animated by WIT Studio, premiered in July 2019 and finished its 24-episode debut run the same year.

Twin Engine officially announced Season 2 eighteen months later in July 2021, with MAPPA taking over the animation production of the series. The second season released in 2023, four years after Season 1 premiered.

At the time of writing, more than three years have passed since the second season ended and an official confirmation continues to elude fans.

Meanwhile, Yukimura concluded Vinland Saga’s 20-year serialization run in July 2025, totaling 220 chapters across 29 volumes, meaning the source material for the subsequent seasons remain fully published and ready for adaptation.
