My Dress Up Darling Author Reveals Spending 13 Hours Watching First Two Episodes Of The Anime

She was so happy and joyful after watching the first two episodes that she ended up crying.

In an interview with Comic Natalie, My Dress Up Darling author Shinichi Fukuda revealed that she watched the first two episodes of the anime continuously for 13 hours straight.

Though Fukuda had never expected the series to get adapted into an anime, she was so happy and joyful after watching the first two episodes that she ended up crying with emotion. According to her, nothing had made her more happy or joyful in her life as a manga artist.

“I received the first and second episodes of the complete packet of the anime and watched them. Everything was so good that I cried with emotion… I watched it over and over again for a total of 13 hours, so happy and joyful that I have never been happier in my life as a manga artist,” Fukuda said.

The author also admitted to being a huge fan of the animation of My Dress Up Darling. She even pre-ordered the Blu-ray discs fairly early. When asked about her favorite scene from the anime, the author said she loved everything about it.

“I like everything about the ‘Kisekoi’ anime. I like the main story, the opening, the ending, everything,” the author said.

When Fukuda was first approached with the news of an anime adaptation of My Dress Up Darling, she had worked through the night to meet a deadline and wasn’t in a condition to think straight. She ended up feeling that the anime would be someone else’s problem and did not have any particular reaction to the news.

“I was tired after the deadline, and I had been up all night and was not thinking straight, so I had a vague feeling that it was someone else’s problem,” Fukuda said.

“I thought it was something that would never happen to me in my life, so I didn’t feel it at all. …… I thought I would be crying and rejoicing more if they decided to make an animated film, but I really didn’t expect it, so when they suddenly told me, I couldn’t do anything about it,” she added

Fukuda mentioned that if she had known about the anime adaptation before hand she wouldn’t have made a simpler outfit for Shizuku that would be less burdensome for animators to adapt.

The author also praised the voice acting of Hina Suguta and Ishige Shouya, who voice the main characters Marin Kitagawa and Gojo Wakana respectively, saying she was very glad that the two of them voiced the characters.

My Dress-Up Darling (Sono Bisuku Dōru wa Koi o Suru) is a manga written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda. It began serialization in Square Enix’s Young Gangan in Jan 2018, and has been compiled into eight volumes as of October 2021.

An anime television series adaptation by CloverWorks premiered in January 2022. As of February 2022, the manga had 5 million copies in circulation in 8 volumes.

Fukuda thanked the fans for reading the manga, saying it was because of them that the anime adaption of the series was possible.

“To those of you who read the original work, thank you for everything. Thanks to all of you, we were able to have the anime made. And thanks to all of you who are propagating it, many people are reading it,” the author told in the interview.
