In a recent interview with French newspaper Le Figaro, Makoto Yukimura revealed his plans for the future, hinting at a potential science fiction project after Vinland Saga manga concludes.
However, he emphasized that he won’t be jumping into a new series right away.
After spending over two decades working on Vinland Saga, Yukimura admitted that exhaustion has set in, and his immediate priority is taking a well-deserved break.
“I spent over twenty years on Vinland Saga, which is due to the fact that I work very slowly. I can finally see the end of it, and I admit that the dominant feeling is that I will finally be able to rest. I don’t feel like working as much anymore. Maybe I say that because I’m a little tired. It’s possible that my state of mind will change after a period of rest.“
While he remains uncertain about when he’ll start his next project, Yukimura made it clear that he has no interest in returning to historical manga, especially not for a series as long as Vinland Saga.
However, the author said that he would return to science fiction and that he had an idea in mind.
“Right now, I don’t feel like diving back into a series as long as this one. As for the theme, I think I’ve covered all my desires regarding historical manga and I would rather return to science fiction. I have an idea but I don’t know yet if I’ll make it short or long, or when I’ll be able to start work on it. The project is there.“
Yukimura is no stranger to science fiction having worked on Planetes before Vinland Saga.
Yukimura had recently revealed that there are only a few more chapters left for Vinland Saga manga, confirming that he had guided the story to its final arc as planned. However, the exact details of its ending remain uncertain even to him.
With only a few chapters left, Yukimura reflected on the challenge of delivering a satisfying ending, expressing his struggles with crafting a conclusion that would resonate with readers.
In a tweet from April 2024, he reflected on his initial underestimation of the story’s length. Originally intended to span around ten years, the manga extended well beyond this timeline.
