Makoto Shinkai has hinted at plans to reveal details of his latest anime film in 2025.
Shinkai made this announcement in his New Year’s message on his official X account, where he reflected on his creative journey over the past year, revealing that 2024 was dedicated to crafting a brand-new film.
“Happy New Year! 2024 was a year I spent working on a new movie. It’s a great joy to build a new world that no one has seen before from scratch with my colleagues. I’ll do my best to announce it in some way this year. I hope that 2025 will be a peaceful year for all of you.“
2025 will also see the release of the live-action adaptation of Shinkai’s 5 Centimeters Per Second anime.
Makoto Shinkai is a Japanese filmmaker and novelist.
Shinkai began his career as a video game animator with Nihon Falcom in 1996, and gained recognition as a filmmaker with the release of the original video animation (OVA) She and Her Cat (1999).
His films Your Name (2016), Weathering with You (2019), and Suzume (2022) are all among the highest-grossing Japanese films of all time both in Japan and worldwide at the time of their release.
His most recent film Suzume was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 81st Golden Globe Awards and received seven nominations at the 51st Annie Awards. It was also nominated in the Best Picture category for Oscars 2024.
