Chad Stahelski revealed to the Hollywood Reporter on Oct 22, 2024, that John Wick‘s anime is actively in production and that it will focus on John’s legendary task which permitted him to retire for love.
“Right now, we’re knee-deep in development on a feature anime about John Wick. It’s a prequel to the movies, which is awesome. It’s fun that it’s in a different medium,” Stahelski stated.
While the format of the anime adaptation was not confirmed before, Stahelski called the work a feature film during the interview.
“So whether it’s the pinball machine or the anime feature film or the new TV show that we’re working on, at least it still comes through us.“
The director also said that the anime medium will allow the creators to be “a little bit more crazy and nutty”. And this was something they found very exciting, as it let them explore the story without being repetitive.
Director Stahleski had confirmed that a John Wick anime adaptation was in the works in an episode of The Discourse Podcast.
John Wick is an American neo-noir action thriller media franchise created by Derek Kolstad. It follows the exploits of John Wick, a former hitman who is drawn back into the criminal underworld he had previously abandoned after the death of his dog.
The franchise’s first movie instalment was John Wick in 2014, followed by three sequels: Chapter 2 in 2017, Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019, and Chapter 4 in 2023. All the four movies were directed by Chad Stahelski. A fifth instalment, titled John Wick 5, is also in the works.
The franchise has various spin-offs in development, beginning with the limited series The Continental: From the World of John Wick debuting in 2023, and the film Ballerina releasing in 2024.
