ABEMA, one of Japan’s leading streaming platforms, has released its annual anime rankings for 2024, revealing the most-watched and most-commented titles of the year.

The rankings, based on viewing data collected from Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2024, highlight the trends that shaped anime viewership on the platform.

The streaming service released two key rankings: the Annual View Count Ranking, which measures average views per episode, and the Annual Comment Count Ranking, which tracks fan interactions during broadcasts.

Oshi No Ko Dominates Streaming Charts for Second Year

For the second year in a row, Oshi No Ko secured the No. 1 spot in ABEMA’s Annual Views Ranking, with its second season continuing the success of its predecessor.

The second season recorded the highest weekly viewership in ABEMA’s anime history.

Meanwhile, the “Annual Comment Ranking”, based on the number of real-time viewer comments, saw Seiyuu to Yoru Asobi 28-Hour TV: Grand Thanksgiving Festival – Overflowing with Love!!!!!!! taking the top spot, followed by Oishinbo.

Year-End Anime Boom & Special Broadcasts Drive Engagement

The ABEMA Anime Free Festival, held during the 2024-2025 year-end period, contributed to record-breaking anime viewership on the platform.

Over 350 anime titles were made available for free, leading to a significant spike in audience numbers.

Among the most-watched title was Dandadan.

Other notable high-ranking titles included Orb: On the Movements of the Earth and The Apothecary Diaries season 1, all of which attracted significant attention as viewers took advantage of the holiday season to catch up on trending anime.

Growing Female Audience

2024 also saw significant shifts in anime viewership demographics.

While male viewers made up 63% of the audience, there was a significant increase in female viewers, which accounted for 37%, a 9% increase from 2023.

The largest demographic growth was among viewers in their 30s, with both men and women in this age group increasing by approximately 5%.

Additionally, anime viewership on TV devices surged by 110% year-over-year, indicating a shift from mobile to larger screens.
