Japan is set to get a new anime awards ceremony, with the inaugural Nippon Anime Awards scheduled to take place on Nov. 21, 2027, at SGC Hall Ariake in Tokyo.

The announcement was made on Nov. 2 during the closing event of TOKYO ANIME NEXT, where Kazuko Ishikawa, chairperson of the AJA, unveiled the awards’ official concept: “Moving Frames. Moving Hearts. Moving the World.”

Organized by the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Nippon Anime Awards aim to celebrate achievements in Japanese animation, recognizing both outstanding anime works and the people behind them.

Alongside the awards ceremony, the initiative will feature programs designed to create new business opportunities for the anime industry and nurture the next generation of talent.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike sent a message of support, stating, “The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will continue to provide strong support for anime and everyone involved in bringing it to life.”

Responding to the governor’s message, Ishikawa said: “We hope to further expand the appeal and potential of anime to the rest of the world and build that future together with all of you.”

The announcement follows an Oct. 30 discussion at TIFFCOM, where anime industry representatives first spoke about the planned awards. The session featured AJA director and A-1 Pictures president Akira Shimizu, Studio Chizu president Yuichiro Saito and Toho animation division chief manager Masaya Saito.

During the discussion, the representatives emphasized the importance of bringing greater recognition to the people working behind anime productions.
