‘I’ll Write What I Want To Write’: Mushoku Tensei Author Says Readers Are An Afterthought As He Stands Firm On Creative Vision

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation author Rifujin na Magonote has made it clear that external opinions—whether praise, criticism, or outright hate—won’t change the way he writes.

In a recent post on X, the author reaffirmed his stance on creative vision, emphasizing that his passion for storytelling comes before catering to an audience.

“I’m happy when I receive praise, sad when I’m criticized, and hurt when I’m subjected to slander or abusive language. But no matter what people say, I’ll still write what I want to write, so nothing changes,” he stated.

While he acknowledged the importance of readers in making his work public, he stressed that their role comes after his own passion.

“If no one were to see it, there’d be no point in making it public, so I do put in the effort to have as many people see it as possible. But that’s only after I’ve written what I love, the way I want to. You mustn’t get that mixed up. Passion comes first, people come second. You all are always an afterthought. Sorry about that.”

Rifujin na Magonote began publishing Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation originally on the internet web novel website Shosetsuka ni Naro in November 2012.

A year later, it was announced that the series would receive a print release under Media Factory’s MF Books imprint, with illustrations done by a Pixiv user called Shirotaka.

The light novels concluded in 2022 with the author stating that Mushoku Tensei will not be receiving a sequel.

However, a three volume after story spin-off, titled Mushoku Tensei: Redundant Reincarnation, was published by Media Factory starting June 2023.

A manga adaptation by Yuka Fujikawa began serialization in the June 2014 issue of Monthly Comic Flapper. Seven Seas Entertainment licensed the tankobon volumes of the manga for localization in North America. The company has also licensed the original light novels.

As of June 2023, over 13 million copies of the light novels have been sold worldwide.

An anime television series adaptation produced by Studio Bind aired from January to December 2021. A second season aired from July 2023 to July 2024. A third season has been announced.
