Voice actor Takahiro Sakurai, who is known for voicing prominent characters like Geto Suguru from Jujutsu Kaisen, Reigen Arataka from Mob Psycho 100, and Giyu Tomioka from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba among others, was reportedly having a 10-year-long extramarital affair with a radio scriptwriter, who was working on his travel radio show P.S Genki Desu. The affair was first reported by Japanese magazine Bunshun on Oct 27, 2022. The staff of the tabloid approached Sakurai to verify what they had found, and during the exchange the voice actor acknowledged the report of his affair.

The incident begun unravelling when Sakurai’s marriage came to light late in September. Bunshun caught the couple on multiple occasions doing window shopping and dining out. When the tabloid approached him, the actor confirmed that he was married. This was when things started falling apart.

According to Bunshun, the writer, who Sakurai was having an affair with, did not know that he was married. So, when the report about the actor’s marriage came out, she had to be rushed to the emergency room. She also immediately left her position as a writer in the show.

A voice acting industry insider noticed that the woman also removed the show from her twitter bio, which raised some questions. The insider asked around and discovered that Sakurai and the writer were having an affair for atleast a decade.

Sakurai’s infidelity would become public in October, after he abruptly cancelled his radio program on 24th. This is when fans began asking more questions and Bunshun’s report which came out a couple of days later put things in perspective for everyone.

Though Sakurai admitted having held back his marital status from the unnamed woman, he denied the claims that he was having a relationship (affair) with marriage in mind.

After their meeting with Sakurai, Bunshun was approached by a representative from Intention, the voice actor’s talent management agency. They said that Sakurai wanted to explain his side of the story himself, but the agency felt that it wasn’t a good idea.

Instead they once again confirmed the details of the affair to Bunshun, and added that Sakurai ended his relationship with the writer as soon as reports of his marriage came out. The agency claim that they too were unaware of the seiyu’s marriage to a “former voice actress”. They were not able to comment on how the wife had taken the news, as they were not in contact with her.

Sakurai, however, told Bunshun that he was talking to his wife about the affair, and that she was aware of what happened.

The talent management agency and Sakurai, both posted an apology on the official website, expressing remorse and offering to rebuild the trust that had been broken in the process.

It is not known if Sakurai will be taking a break from voice acting. No updates have been given on the status of the characters that he has currently been voicing.

Fans were disappointed at yet another voice actor’s adultery coming out in the open, after the recent high profile case involving Lisa and Tatsuhisa Suzuki. They have gone ahead and started choosing the VA’s they’d like to replace Sakurai, with Mamoru Miyano coming out as a favorite for some of them.
