City Hunter Manga Gets First Ever Japanese Live-Action Adaptation Starring Ryohei Suzuki

Netflix will be producing the adaptation.

Tsukasa Hojo’s action detective comedy manga City Hunter will be getting its first ever Japanese live-action film adaptation. Netflix has teamed up with Japanese production companies, Horipro and Office Shirous, to produce the film.

Netflix describes the live-action as, “a modern-day updated version of the manga, set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku”.

The live-action will be directed by Yuichi Sato, with Ryohei Suzuki starring as Ryo Saeba. Tatsuro Mishima will be in charge of script, and Yoshihide Otomo will be composing the music for the film.

A new visual featuring Suzuki as Ryo Saeba has been revealed.

Here is what Suzuki has to say about the new adaptation:

I am pleased to announce that I will be playing the role of the main character, Ryo Saeba, in the Netflix movie “City Hunter”.
I feel a great responsibility and am trembling with nervousness to be entrusted with this masterpiece created by Mr. Tsukasa Hojo and the character of Ryo Saeba, who is loved by countless fans. Since I have decided to take on the role, I will devote all of my experience and devote myself to it with all my heart and soul. I will take good care of this project with great love and responsibility.
How can we make the world of “City Hunter” best enjoyed by the fans and even by the generations who do not know the original work? How can we summon a man named Ryo Saeba as a real person in this Shinjuku of 2021? I am constantly thinking about the balance between fiction and reality, the 80s and the 2020s.
I am determined to deliver the cool, romantic, silly, chunky, and supremely cool City Hunter world to everyone with great care and respect.

City Hunter is also getting an anime film adaptation that will release sometime in 2023.

The franchise had spawned a media franchise consisting of numerous adaptations and spin-offs from several countries. The franchise includes four anime television series, three anime television specials, two original video animations, several animated feature films (including a film released in February 2019), several live-action films (including a Hong Kong film starring Jackie Chan and a French film), video games, and a live-action Korean TV drama.

City Hunter is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Tsukasa Hojo. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1985 to 1991 and collected into 35 tankōbon volumes by its publisher Shueisha.

The manga was adapted into an anime television series by Sunrise Studios in 1987.

It also had a spin-off manga, Angel Heart, which in turn spawned its own anime television series and a live-action Japanese TV drama.
