The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed the full list of films eligible for consideration in the Animated Feature category for the 98th Academy Awards. In that list are seven anime films, including Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle, which are now officially in the race for Oscars.

The complete list of eligible anime films are as follows:

  • Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc
  • Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle
  • ChaO
  • COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing
  • Dragon Heart – Adventures Beyond This World
  • 100 Meters
  • Scarlet

With 35 films eligible this year, the Academy is expected to proceed with a full slate of five nominees in the Animated Feature category.

However, several films have not yet completed their qualifying theatrical runs; they must meet that requirement and all other rules before the end of the year to advance to the nomination round.

Voting for the category is open automatically to members of the Animation Branch. Academy members from other branches may choose to opt in, though they must meet minimum viewing requirements before being allowed to vote.

Eligible animated features may also compete for nominations in additional categories, including Best Picture.

This year’s strong anime presence arrives after a disappointing showing at the 2025 Oscars, where no anime films were nominated, despite five titles, including Look Back, The Colors Within and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, being eligible.

Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron was the only anime nominee in 2024 and went on to win Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards. Before that, Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai was the last anime film nominated, back in 2019.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on March 15, 2026.
