Eiichiro Oda has sealed the answer to one of One Piece‘s biggest questions, “What is One Piece?,” 651 meters beneath the ocean, as the manga surpassed 600 million copies in worldwide circulation with the release of Volume 114.
According to the video posted on the franchise’s official X account, Oda recorded the secret of One Piece and its protagonist Monkey D. Luffy on a single sheet of paper for the first time. The page was torn in half. The upper portion reads, “What is One Piece? And who is Monkey D. Luffy?” while the lower half contains the answer to these questions.
The portion containing the truth was sealed inside a treasure chest and deployed to the seafloor at an undisclosed location, where it will remain until the manga concludes. The contents are scheduled to be revealed only after the story’s completion.
The footage also noted that the seabed deployment and filming were conducted under the supervision of researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP) Phase 3.
The teams reviewed equipment installation, retrieval procedures and filming methods with consideration for environmental protection, including potential impacts on marine ecosystems.

The 600 million milestone marks an increase of 90 million copies in approximately three years and seven months. The manga previously surpassed 510 million copies with the release of Volume 103 in August 2022.
The franchise also launched the second global character popularity poll, “WT100 (World Top 100).” The poll is being held for the first time in about five years, following the first edition in 2021, commemorating the manga’s 1,000th chapter.
A total of 1,560 characters are eligible, and voting is open worldwide.
The manga has been running in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump since July 1997. Viz Media publishes the series in English in North America and the United Kingdom, while Madman Entertainment handles its release in Australia.
