Takaki himself expressed both excitement and surprise over the adaptation, especially given that the manga was canceled after just five volumes. Despite this, he reassured fans that the adaptation respects the original story while improving upon it.

Takaki also revealed that he has been deeply involved in the production of anime, supervising the settings and storyboards.

Congratulations on the anime adaptation of BLACK TORCH! I don’t think there’s anyone more excited and surprised than me. This is all thanks to everyone who has loved the manga, both in Japan and overseas.
As for the production, I’ve been supervising the settings and storyboards, and I feel it’s been recreated into something even better, while still fully respecting the original story. A new BLACK TORCH has been brought to life, now with voices, sounds, movement and color. There are battles, cats, and thighs! We hope you enjoy it!

Kei Umabiki will direct the anime at 100Studio, with Go Suzuki handling character designs. Gigaemon Ichikawa is in charge of supervising and writing the scripts, while Yutaka Yamada will compose the music.

Tsuyoshi Takaki’s BLACK TORCH was serialized in Shueisha’s monthly shonen manga magazine Jump Square from December 2016 to March 2018, and later on the digital platform Shōnen Jump+ from April to July 2018.

Its chapters were compiled in five tankobon volumes.

In North America, the manga was licensed for English language release by Viz Media.
