Following its international rollout in January 2026, Japanese data science company Comici Inc.’s next-generation digital reading platform, comici MANGA, aims to become the “Netflix of Manga.”

Available both as an app (on Play Store and App Store) and website, comici MANGA is looking to unite various labels from Japanese manga publishers under one shared account, syncing purchases and reading history across.

According to the company, bringing together publishers would cut down costs of developing manga apps individually, while giving users a robust selection of titles across genres.

Currently, the platform hosts content from the following five labels, with more to be added in the future.

  • Comic Growl (BUSHIROAD WORKS)
  • Kimicomi (KILL TIME COMMUNICATION)
  • COMIC Ruelle & COMIC Jardin (Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha, Ltd.)
  • Manga-SPA! (FUSOSHA)
  • Ohzora Shuppan (OHZORA PUBLISHING CO.,Ltd.)

comici MANGA is now available in 12 countries, including USA, Canada, France, Spain, Germany, the Philippines, Thailand, India, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Indonesia, and features a variety of titles including The Ancient Magus’ Bride alongside Magical Girl Inaba and others with select chapters available to read for free, while others are locked behind a subscription (or can be rented).

Titles behind a paywall can only be accessed via mobile app, while free chapters can be read both on browsers and the app.

Aiming To Be The Netflix Of Manga:

Since its launch, comici MANGA has already amassed over 110,000 cumulative downloads. Looking ahead, the company’s CEO Daisaku Manda has shared his vision for 2026, explaining how the platform plans to operate much like the streaming giant Netflix.

Modern digital apps heavily utilize user data, but Manda argues that misapplying this information has caused significant industry issues.

He pointed to the recent plateau in the webtoon market to better illustrate this problem.

When artists look at platform data to decide what to draw, they often lean into tropes that perform well in the short term, such as the popular villainess genre.

This approach inevitably leads to genre overload, causing readers to experience severe fatigue as platforms become saturated with repetitive storylines.

Instead of restricting creation, Manda believes data should be utilized exclusively for matching, discovery, and translation.

He highlighted Netflix as a prime example of how to use data correctly.

Rather than focusing on short-term viewership numbers that might skew a creator’s artistic vision, the streaming giant focuses on retention and what makes a user stay.

Because maintaining long-term subscriptions requires a wide variety of content, Netflix naturally pivots to multiple genres and relies on a sophisticated suggestion system to match viewers with diverse shows.

While not looking to create a direct copy of Netflix, Manda wants comici MANGA to similarly introduce readers to a wide variety of titles based on their specific tastes.

He intends to use platform data purely to match viewers with localized content, rather than using it to dictate what artists should draw.

Meanwhile, Manda wants the manga creation process to combine the intuition of artists and editors with the real-time reactions of readers.

comici MANGA relies on the company’s existing cross-publisher platform, comimaga, and its advanced Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) management system, comici+.

In Japan, major publishers already use the comici+ system to handle digital store operations, data analysis and advertising for popular web services like Akita Shoten’s Champion Cross and Young Champion Web, as well as Hakusensha’s Young Animal Web (known for Berserk manga).

The underlying technology has proven highly successful domestically, supporting over 3 million registered users and generating approximately 130 million monthly page views across Comici’s Japan-based web services.
