Lycoris Recoil’s Staff Harassed On Twitter For Not Furthering The Yuri Plot

Majima and Chisato's interaction didn't go down well with a section of the fanbase.

The fans of Lycoris Recoil harassed a staff member, Yusuke Kanbayasahi, who wrote the scripts for multiple episodes, including the final episode 13 of the anime, for not furthering the yuri plot between the main characters Chisato and Takina.

A section of fans were disappointed at how the final episode turned out, as much of the it focused on Chisato and the main antagonist Majima, including the fight between them and the heartfelt interactions they had in the midst of it. This was contrary to the fans’ expectations of getting more Chisato and Takina moments, who were a popular ship.

This prompted many of them to direct their ire towards the staff of the anime. Most of the replies to Yusuke’s tweet focused on how Takina was sidelined in the final episode.

Lycoris Recoil

“I have to say that [your] script is awful. Almost every characters in the last four episodes are confusing. What makes me feel so angry is that as an essential character, takina seems have nothing to do with the plot and her indeed contributions for chisato is always being ignored,” a Twitter user replied to the staff’s tweet.

“Apart from that, why are you creating such incidents about majima and chisato? Don’t u know that the true emotion line should be about chisato and takina? Though it’s rude to say but I have to admit that the action between majima and chisato in the last ep make me want to vomit,” they added.

There were other similar responses where staff was questioned if they actually knew who the main character of the series was. Some pointed out that Lycoris Recoil anime had yuri themes from the start, however, putting the onus on Majima in the final episode went totally against what the show made the fans expect.

Fans even questioned if the staff knew what the viewers of the anime were looking for.

“So what do you think of Takina? Is she really a heroine in your opinion? Do you think Majima is more important than Takina? If that’s what you think, then don’t write any scripts because you don’t even know who the main character is,” another user wrote complaining about Takina’s lack of involvement.

“From the beginning, it pretends to be a yuri work, but in the end, nothing progresses, and Mashima is not dead at the end. Guys like Majima are the most disgusting thing to see in this show,” another comment read.

The scene where Chisato and Majima shared a drink from the same can seemed to have irked the shippers of Chisato and Takina even more.

“Why did Chisato and Majima drink the same cup? I hate it so much,” a user wrote.

When a fan asked Yusuke why he chose to include that scene in the final episode of Lycoris Recoil anime, and what it was supposed to depict, the staff responded as follows:

“There are many layers to the description. The intention of Chisato and Majima’s actions, the meaning attached to the work, metaphors, or meanings that arise independently of the creator’s intention. Chisato and Majima are not acting with the audience in mind. I think it is up to the viewer to find meaning in that. For us, we are open to interpretation.”

There were many who put out toxic and abusive messages, blaming how Yusuke wrote the script and ridiculing how he chose to proceed with the story. The harassment was called out and condoned by many, as they showed their support for the creators.

“Toxicity and acts of harassment over any staff involved in the production of a series is entirely uncalled for. In the case of LycoReco, the obvious behavior towards Kanbayashi who handled the script for almost half of the series over sullied yuribait expectations is disturbing,” a user wrote.

However, despite the toxic responses from a section of fans, a lot of others reacted positively to the final episode of the anime and praised the script writer on his work.

Lycoris Recoil is an original anime series created by Spider Lily and Asaura. The series is animated by A-1 Pictures. Episode 13 of the anime aired on Sep 24, 2022, in Japan and it was largely one of the most well received anime in the country.

MAL describes the plot of the anime as follows:

The number of terrorist acts in Japan has never been lower, thanks to the efforts of a syndicate called Direct Attack (DA). The organization raises orphaned girls as killers to carry out assassinations under their “Lycoris” program. Takina Inoue is an exceptional Lycoris with a strong sense of purpose and a penchant for perfection. Unfortunately, a hostage situation tests her patience, and the resulting act of insubordination leads to her transfer out of DA. Not thrilled about losing the only place she belonged to, she reluctantly arrives at her new base of operations—LycoReco, a cafe in disguise.

Takina’s new partner, however, turns out to be quite different from what she imagined. Despite being the famed Lycoris prodigy, Chisato Nishikigi appears almost unconcerned with her duties. She drags Takina along on all kinds of odd jobs under the simple explanation of helping people in need. Takina is even more puzzled when Chisato takes down a group of armed assailants without killing any of them. Feeling like a fish out of water, Takina itches to get reinstated into DA—but Chisato is determined to prove to her that there is more to a life than just taking them.
