Yoko Takahashi’s “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis,” the opening theme from Neon Genesis Evangelion, has been voted the greatest anime song of all time in a new global ranking compiled by Japanese broadcaster TBS.
The song claimed the No. 1 spot in Japan’s Strongest Anime Songs Best 100 ranking (romaji – Nihon no saikyo anime songu besuto 100), which was determined by votes from 166 music professionals across 41 countries and regions.
The results were revealed during TBS’ variety program Professional Ranking on June 22. The special brought together singers, musicians, composers, music producers and other music industry professionals from around the world to vote on what they consider Japan’s greatest anime songs.
Naruto Shippuden‘s “Blue Bird” finished second, while Dragon Ball Z‘s “CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA” took third place.

The latest accolade comes just weeks after “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” reached another major milestone in Japan.
The song recently logged its 1,000th cumulative week on the Oricon Weekly Karaoke Ranking, becoming only the fourth song in the chart’s history to achieve the feat.
Furthermore, the Evangelion franchise also announced a new anime series during its 30th anniversary celebrations.
