Jujutsu Kaisen: Does Megumi Know Toji Is His Father?

Megumi's father didn't bother himself with his son's gender while naming him. But he did bother with fixing the right price for his son's technique. Apparently this is all Megumi knows about "the man" who left him and his step-sister Tsumiki on their own. Does he know who his father is? Read to find out

Toji Fushiguro is a force to be reckoned with. He owned the Zen’in family both in life and after death, without even being part of it. And his trump card is his son Megumi Fushiguro.

His father didn’t bother himself with Megumi’s gender while naming him like he often says. But he did bother with fixing the right price for his son’s technique.

However, apparently, this is all Megumi knows about “the man” who left him and his step-sister Tsumiki on their own.

Does he know who his father is? Keep reading to find out!

Does Megumi know Toji is his father?

No, Megumi does not know that Toji is his father.

Megumi only has a rough idea of what his father was. He probably knows the basic details about Toji that everyone else knows too.

These details include Toji abandoning the Zen’in family name and taking up his wife’s name, Fushiguro.

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 79

In chapter 79, Gojo has a flashback to his meeting with first-grader Megumi. Gojo tries to tell him everything about his father, but Megumi interrupts him.

He does not care where he is or what he is doing. All he cares about is what will happen to him and Tsumiki.

Since this is a first-grader child we’re talking about, it is definite that Toji left him very early for him even to remember his face.

And it is so proven as well by the hints in the manga! What are they? Let’s take a look.

Evidence that Megumi doesn’t know Toji

In chapter 9, Megumi has a flashback. The flashback has Megumi sitting near Tsumiki at the hospital as he thinks about their father.

Megumi thinks his father is alive

Surprisingly, he says that his father is still alive somewhere. Of course, at this point, the readers didn’t know about Toji. Later, in the Hidden Inventory arc, we come to know that Gojo had killed Toji years ago.

Near the end of the Hidden Inventory arc (which took place in 2006), Megumi was close to four years old.

When Gojo goes to meet Megumi for the first time, it’s one year after the Star Plasma incident (which is somewhere in 2007).

Gojo tries to tell Megumi that he killed Toji, but Megumi does not give him a chance to say it. So it goes without saying that he believes that his father is still alive.

Failed to recognize Toji at Shibuya

The Shibuya Incident was ruthless for multiple reasons. And one of those reasons was a battle between the Fushiguros. It was fierce in both the clash and the emotions it brought.

There was a small possibility that Megumi realizes the man standing in front of him was his father, Toji Fushiguro. But no, that did not happen.

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 111

Megumi was, in fact, taken by surprise by this “fully realized Maki” and was too busy saving his life. He even thought to himself who this absurdly powerful guy was.

Hence, we can easily say that Megumi doesn’t know Toji is his father nor does he know that his father is actually a dead man.

A dead man who was resurrected and saved Megumi before dying again.

Megumi’s missed chances at knowing about Toji

As much as Megumi basks in oblivion, there are a couple of opportunities he missed on to know about his father.

The first one is from Gojo’s past, the same first interaction in chapter 79. With Megumi saying he doesn’t care about his father, he cut off Gojo’s confession.

Gojo offered him a choice, though. If and when Megumi had the curiosity to find out what Gojo was saying that day, he could ask Gojo.

But, clearly, Megumi never did ask Gojo more about his father. He did not even care enough about “the man” to enquire upon his death.

Well, well. Won’t you regret it later, Megumi-kun?

Another instance which I would call only a half-chance came along in the Shibuya Incident.

Toji appeared out of nowhere in Dagon’s Domain Expansion as a blessing for Naobito, Megumi, Maki, and Nanami. As soon as Toji entered the fight, the then family head immediately recognized him and even said it out loud.

Naobito 1
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 110

Could Naobito have told Megumi the identity of this mysterious man? Maybe. Was he trying to keep Toji’s identity hidden?

It does not make sense to do so. It probably was not the right time to address this issue in the midst of a life-or-death fight.

And after the fight? Before Naobito could even take a proper breath, Jogo escorted him to death’s door.

So, even if Naobito wanted to tell Megumi about Toji, he could not do so.

These were the two times Megumi came close yet was so far away from knowing about Toji.

But now that Megumi has been made the head of Zen’in clan as per Naobito’s will, it seems that he will surely come to know about Toji soon in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Will Gojo’s unheard confession impact Megumi’s future?

Gojo was on the brink of telling Megumi about his father’s death in chapter 79. Specifically, he was going to straight-up tell Megumi that he killed Toji.

But, Megumi did not want to listen to this confession. And we already established that even after a decade, Megumi still doesn’t know of Toji’s death.

According to Naobito’s will in chapter 138, Megumi is the Zen’in family head. It is safe to say that this decision has a huge impact and brewed up a storm.

The jujutsu families involve themselves in a lot of politics, as is apparent throughout the story.

Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 79

How will the stakeholders in Naobito’s decision twist an event Megumi does not even know happened? This small occurrence is a strong possibility for the clan members to sway Megumi’s opinion.

We already know that with Satoru’s existence, the power scale favored the Gojo family.

Will this unheard confession ensue chaos for Megumi? After all, he trusted Gojo with his and Tsumiki’s life and accepted him as his sensei.

What if someone tells him that very man killed Toji for eliminating a threat? There is no telling who will use doubts in Megumi’s mind and how.

Was Toji really as bad they could get?

Before this article comes to an end, let’s talk about Toji again. Was he really the worst of the lot? Some hints from the story prove otherwise.

In chapter 113, Toji does go to meet Naobito and bargain the proper price for his technique. Anyone can tell how heartless this person needs to be for trying to sell their own child.

But the following panels from the same chapter tell an inkling of a different story.

Toji 1
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 113

Did Toji really not care about Megumi? Why in the world would he want someone to take care of a child he did not give a damn about? And why would he think of his son’s potential?

Toji’s monologues tell a different story than that of a heartless man. It seems that he truly wanted Megumi to be cared about and find his place as a talented child.

Another thing that points to this is the incident in Shibuya. After fighting for what seemed such a long fight with Megumi, Toji killed himself.

But what he said before dying raised a flurry of emotions and confusion in all of us.

Not even seconds ago, he blindly wanted to kill the person in front of him. But, he regained consciousness just to ask the person his family name.

Toji Megumi
Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 113

Upon hearing it was not Zen’in but Fushiguro, we can see the hint of smug happiness on Toji’s face.

He probably did not want Megumi to go to the Zen’in family but thought it would be the best for him and his talents.

He could become a respectable shaman and earn enough to sustain even Tsumiki. When he saw that his son had achieved that without compromising the Fushiguro name, he probably felt relieved.

Why else would he go through death again?

A small discrepancy:

Ok, now that we have addressed everything related to Megumi’s knowledge about Toji, it’s time to bring up a small discrepancy that we found in the series.

The cause for the discrepancy is the following panel.

Megumi and Tsumiki ch 59

At first look, nothing really stands out. But look closely, it says that Megumi’s father and Tsumiki’s mother got married when they were in the first grade. Capisce?

First Graders are usually around 6-7 years according to the Japanese school system. Meaning Megumi had to be at least 6 years old when his father married Tsumiki’s mom.

But, according to the timeline in the Hidden Inventory arc, Toji died in the year 2006 (Gojo was a second year in Jujutsu High).

Megumi was born in 2002, meaning he would only be around 4 when Toji died. So how did his ‘father’ get married to Tsumiki’s mom when he was around 6-7.

It is highly possible that this is a translation error in the panel. But, knowng Gege Akutami and his foreshadowing, could this be a hint.

Who could this father be? Since we established that Megumi did not know who Toji is, could it be that someone else took his place? Could it be the guy that Toji worked with (we see him in the hidden inventory arc)?

Well, that’s a topic for another time.

What do you think about Toji? Do you think he had a reason to leave Megumi? Let us know in the comments!
