Warner Bros. Developed The Lord Of The Ring’s Latest Anime Film For A Reason Beyond Box Office Success

The War of Rohirrim anime film

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim has debuted to $4.6 million at the box office, according to a recent report by Variety. However, it was revealed that the film’s performance in the box office was not Warner Bros.’ primary focus.

The anime film, which was produced on a $30 million budget, was developed and rushed into production primarily to safeguard New Line Cinema’s rights to adapt J. R. R. Tolkien’s works.

The studio has held these rights through a licensing agreement with Zaentz Co. since the late 1990s. Though the specific terms of the contract are not public, it is believed that Warner Bros. is required to maintain active development and production of Tolkien-related projects to retain the rights.

In early 2022, Zaentz Co., which controls a portfolio of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rights, reportedly began exploring a sale of its Tolkien holdings.

This move raised the stakes for Warner Bros., as a lapse in development could have jeopardized the studio’s control, potentially allowing competitors to acquire the rights.

To preempt this, Warner Bros. expedited The War of the Rohirrim into production, ensuring compliance with the licensing agreement’s requirements for ongoing activity.

Jackson, along with key collaborators from his Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit films, is currently working on two movies, which are slated for 2026 and beyond.

The first of these projects is titled Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum. It will be directed by Andy Serkis, who is also reprising his role as Gollum.

In the past, New Line Cinema had faced challenges in retaining adaptation rights to other properties. A notable example is the comic series Y: The Last Man.

The studio acquired the film rights in 2007 and initiated development with various directors and writers over the years.

However, despite prolonged efforts, production never commenced, and by 2014, the rights reverted to the creators, Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.

Similarly, the Friday the 13th franchise experienced a similar issue. Paramount Pictures developed plans for a reboot between 2013 and 2017, but delays and cancellations led to the rights reverting to New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. in 2018.

Zaentz Co.’s rights portfolio includes movies, video games, live events, theme parks, and merchandising based on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. It also provides limited matching rights for potential adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumous works, such as The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales.

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of Rohirrim released in U.S. on Dec 13, 2024, and internationally on Dec 11, 2024.

Kenji Kamiyama, known for his work on Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Eden Of The East, directed the film, with Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, Sam Register, Carolyn Blackwood and Toby Emmerich serving as executive producers.

It was produced by produced by Oscar winner Philippa Boyens, known for her work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, alongside Jason DeMarco and Joseph Chou.

During an interview with Anime Expo, director Kenji Kamiyama spoke about the female representation in the film.

In Japanese animation, it’s not uncommon for a female protagonist to be the main character, but it’s more rare in the live-action films made from The Lord of the Rings. Our film has a strong female lead in Héra, and our story is narrated by the noble Tolkien figure Éowyn, so women are very well represented. I think there are a lot of fans who really like Tolkien’s original work, so I hope those people will enjoy it. Making this movie has been a fun challenge.

Voice cast includes:

  • Gaia Wise as Héra
  • Brian Cox as Helm Hammerhand
  • Luke Pasqualino as Wulf
  • Miranda Otto as Éowyn & Narrator

The cast also include Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna, and Janine Duvitski.

The plot of The Lord of the Rings: The War of Rohirrim is described as follows:

Set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original trilogy of films, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim tells the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan. A sudden attack by Wulf, a clever and ruthless Dunlending lord seeking vengeance for the death of his father, forces Helm and his people to make a daring last stand in the ancient stronghold of the Hornburg— a mighty fortress that will later come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Finding herself in an increasingly desperate situation, Héra, the daughter of Helm, must summon the will to lead the resistance against a deadly enemy intent on their total destruction.
