The Apothecary Diaries Creator Made Several Additions To Season 3 So It Wouldn’t Feel ‘Weaker’

The Apothecary Diaries creator Natsu Hyuga revealed via her official X account that she contributed additional material for anime’s third season so that the narrative doesn’t weaker than Season 2.

Hyuga noted that while the primary source material for the anime adaptation is her light novel, the manga version had expanded upon many elements in greater depth during earlier storylines, which the anime referenced.

The manga adaptation illustrated by Nekokurage and composed by Itsuki Nanao, however, stands at chapter 88 with the Shi clan rebellion arc.

Since the manga is still on the closing events of the material adapted in Season 2, Season 3 marks the first time the anime adapts light novel content (from volume five), causing concerns that the narrative could feel weaker compared to the prior season.

This prompted the author to work alongside director Akinori Fudesaka and series composition writer Norihiro Naganuma to smooth the narrative and improve its quality.

A brief behind-the-scenes tidbit about Season 3:

Starting with this season, there were many parts where the anime moved ahead of the manga.

While the original work is a novel, many elements were explored in greater depth by the manga adaptation; on top of that, the setting shifts to a stage with a different scale compared to the first two seasons.

Therefore, taking into account the high possibility that it might feel weaker in comparison to Season 2, I took the liberty of making several additions to the material.

Viewers pointed out that the first episode of the season itself has started incorporating additional details, which includes showing Gyokyuou and also mentioning that Anshi’s clan was not elevated to a named status.

The third season premiered on Oct. 2, 2026 in Japan. The season runs for 24 episodes as a split-cour broadcast, with the first cour airing through the fall 2026 season and the second cour scheduled to premiere in April 2027.

Hyuga’s direct script involvement follows earlier contributions for the franchise, including the bridging short story The Secret of Sazen, written to connect the second and third seasons.

The author also penned the original story for the upcoming theatrical film The Apothecary Diaries: The Deceased Empress’ Treasure, premiering in Japanese theaters on Dec. 11, 2026, as well as the scenario for the upcoming video game The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother, scheduled for console release in early 2027.

The Apothecary Diaries originated as a web novel on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in October 2011 before publishing in print under the Hero Bunko imprint in August 2014 with illustrations by Touko Shino.

The series follows Maomao, an eccentric young pharmacist from the capital pleasure district who is kidnapped and sold into domestic servitude at the imperial palace.

In August 2026, publisher Imagica Infos confirmed that the series surpassed 57 million copies (including both manga and light novel volumes) in circulation worldwide across print editions, digital sales, and 16 translated foreign languages.
