Re:Zero: What Did Al Do In The Background In Priestella City?

Aldebaran Priestalla

Re:Zero is a series that is well known for the mysteries in it. And among those mysteries we have Aldebaran. He is a character who we know very little about. Heck, we don’t even know what he looks like beneath that helmet of his.

And in Re:Zero Season 3 (or Arc 5) we were given even more reasons to doubt Al and his actions. Why? Because when Subaru and the others were trying to fend off the attack from the Witch Cult, it seems that Priscilla’s minion was out in the city doing some very questionable things.

This bit of information gets highlighted in the final episode of Re:Zero Season 3 too. So what exactly is it that Al was doing.

What was Al up to in Priestella city?

Our attention is drawn to Al’s possible suspicious activities in Priestella city when Beatrice mentions that he was the one who got her a high quality mana crystal, which helped awaken her and also in the ensuing fight against Lye Batenkaitos.

Now, as Emilia pointed out, that is indeed a good thing. However, let’s go back one episode and look at what Capella had to say about Al.

It’s not like we are going to trust a Sin Archbishops words, however, this vile body shifter had no reason to lie during her fight with our masked man!

During their exchange, Capella dropped a bombshell accusation: she believed that Al was the one who caused certain calamities in the city, and not the Witch Cult.

She insinuated that it was actually Al who opened the floodgates to inundate Priestella (something the cult was “supposedly” doing), and even hinted that Al murdered the members of the Council of Ten (the city’s governing council) amidst the chaos.

The council of ten issue was something that was discussed in the first cour of the third season. In other words, Capella suspected Al of doing the very dirty work which the Witch Cult was taking credit for. She even tried to get Al to confess to these crimes, but Al doesn’t fall for the obvious bait.

Since he was the one who brought the crystals to Beatrice, we can safely assume he probably stole them from Kiritaka Muse. If he was involved in wiping out the Council of Ten, stealing some mana crystals, couldn’t have been a difficult job for him.

Now, opening the floodgates and taking out the council of ten in a way helped Priestella weather the storm. When the floodgates opened, Subaru, Garfiel and the others were able to escape from fights that they were on the verge of losing.

On the other hand, by taking out the council of ten, Al made sure that the Witch Cult would never find the location of the Witch’s remains which they were looking for.

While one can argue that these actions were for the greater good, I am pretty sure Subaru, and even Anastasia and Felt would have been against the methods that Al used. Priscilla herself is a different matter though.

On top of that Al has remained very secretive throughout the current Arc. From his demeanor, it is pretty obvious that he is privy to a lot more information than what he reveals. While he did try to brush all of it away with his joking attitude, even Subaru seems to have developed doubts regarding what Al’s end goal could be.

In the end, it is safe to say that Al’s actions didn’t do him any good when it comes to judging his character or his motives.
