With the continuous flow of Manga chapters and Anime episodes feeding hungry fans on a consistent basis, Toei Animation has officially announced that there’s a new movie that is set to release in 2022.
The world-famous animation company had intended to make this news just before the airing of Episode 1000 in order to shock and delight its adoring audience.
However, by examining the One Piece site’s algorithm, fans have leaked the announcement 1-2 days before the episode dropped. Prior to this announcement, the film’s name and staff were mentioned in Weekly Shonen Jump 2021 Issue 51.
So without further ado, let’s dive into what we know about the upcoming movie so far. Here’s everything you need to know about One Piece Film: Red!
Premise:
So far, nothing concrete is known about the plot except for a small teaser by the official site:
In this movie, the Straw Hats will participate in a “Music Festival” on a certain island!? What exactly is the music festival on a certain island!? And what kind of adventures are waiting for the Straw Hats who have become more powerful with 10 members?
However, from the first teaser trailer, we get to know that Shanks, whose trademark scar can be seen on the “D” in the film’s title logo and a new female character (Uta) will be featured.

That is the reason why I decided to be involved in this project after such a long time.
If possible, I’d like to look back at what “ONE PIECE” was for me and try to find some answers in my own way.
It may be a little different from the “ONE PIECE” of the past, but for precisely that reason, I want to express a “ONE PIECE” that has never been seen before.
Of course, I don’t intend to ignore the previous TV series and movies.
The anime “ONE PIECE” has such a great history. With that as a foundation, I would like to discover new possibilities with the help of Mr. Kuroiwa, the scriptwriter, and the other staff.

All that is left is to get the script right, and the project will definitely be interesting! It turns out, when Mr. Oda read the finished script, he said, “It’s fantastic!” so I guess I was able to fulfill my role. Over the course of two years, we discussed with Mr. Oda and Mr. Taniguchi, and the process of getting closer to the goal little by little was like an adventure on a ship, those days passing like a dream. This is a story we wove together. I’m sure it will be a great movie that will touch many people’s hearts.

Coming to the question “Whether One Piece: Red is canon or not?” There’s no official confirmation as of yet. But fans speculate that, since Eiichiro Oda isn’t the scriptwriter and is in charge of supervision, the film isn’t most likely canon.
However, Shanks did make an appearance in Episode 955. So fans think it hinted at the upcoming movie.

The original “Festival Costume” sketches for the Straw Hats from the movie “ONE PIECE FILM RED” have been revealed at the JUMP SUPER STAGE “ONE PIECE”!
The Straw Hats will take part in a “Music Festival” on a certain island in this film!? This time, the Straw Hats’ character model sheets in their unique outfits have been released, and they appear to be attending a midsummer outdoor live music festival. These were created by the film’s general producer, Eiichiro Oda, the original creator.
The following is the 2nd set of “battle uniforms” costumes and sketches by Eiichiro Oda.
The crew is dressed in leather with studs and chains, a break from the unique music festival-specific attire, to create a sense of solidarity. The combat clothes are themed ROCK x PIRATES. Oda’s personal style can be found in the costumes.
In addition to the sketches, colored versions of the battle-costumed characters were also released.
Coming to Movie Red exclusives, One Piece author Eiichiro Oda drew illustrations of the 3 key characters who will play a big role!
Uta – the world’s greatest Diva and the daughter of Shanks. For some unknown reason, she wants Luffy to quit being a pirate. Uta was envisioned as a result of Oda’s desire to have a female character star in Film Red, in contrast to the previous films, in which the key new characters were older men. She was 9 years old when Shanks still has the straw hat. But we see her shedding tears and leaving him. The reasons are unknown.
Shanks – chief of the red-haired pirates and one of the 4 emperors that rule over the new world. He inspired Luffy to begin his own journey to become the king of the pirates. Oda teases the possibility of Shanks meeting Luffy while commenting on Jump Festa.
Gordon, who appears in the special report and is the first visual release, is a huge man with a large scar on his head. He is a man who appears to know about Uta and Shanks but remains cloaked in mystery.

Last but not the least, we have 5 more shaded illustrations of characters who are not exactly part of the main crew but do play a crucial part in the film. These are Trafalgar Law, Bepo, Bartolomeo, Koby and Helmeppo.

Gorō Taniguchi is a well-known Japanese anime director, writer, producer and storyboard artist, who is among Sunrise’s noted directors. He was amongst the Original Creators and storyboard artists of Code Geass, along with the recap and feature films. He was also the director of the series Planetes.
Did you know Taniguchi worked on One Piece even before this film? He previously directed the OVA “One Piece – Defeat Him! The Pirate Ganzack”, which was released in 1998—24 years before this film and more than a year before the debut of Episode 1 of the Anime.
Scriptwriter Tsutomu Kuroiwa has previously written for One Piece films such as One Piece Film Gold (Movie 13) and the Special – One Piece: Heart of Gold.
Release Date:
One Piece Film Red will release on August 6th (Saturday), 2022 in Japan. According to the teaser, the release schedule may differ in other countries depending on their location.
