New Dragon Ball Super Manga Arc Will Be A Prequel To Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Movie

This new arc notably centers on the duo of Goten and Trunks and will release on December 20.

An official advertisement on the recently released issue of V-Jump Magazine confirms that the Dragon Ball Super Manga will resume with the release of Chapter 88 on Dec 20, 2022!

The ad contains sketches of Teen Goten & Trunks in Super Hero costumes, a panel of Gohan and Piccolo in the Moro arc with the latter saying to the former “Now get out there and end this!” and Goku as he was drawn for Volume 18. Additionally, the ad jotted down a few details about the upcoming story arc.

The chapter kicks off a new arc (following the Granolah arc) that serves as the prequel to the anime film Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (which was released in Japan on June 11), before adapting the film itself. This new arc notably centers on the duo of Goten and Trunks, with Gohan and Piccolo also poised to play important roles.

Goten and Trunks as superheroes in the new Dragon Ball Super Manga arc
Goten and Trunks donning superhero-style outfits! Could that mean these two eccentric half-Saiyans are going to become heroes who protect the city from danger?!

Further rumors suggest this arc to be not as long as the Granolah arc and its 1st chapter will include Broly’s first in-chapter appearance (apart from the Bonus & Extra Manga Panels).

The V-Jump issue also unveiled November month’s Interval Special (which recaps previous arcs and character plot points), featuring a new illustration of Super Saiyan 3 Goku by Toyotaro.

Written by Akira Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou, Dragon Ball Super is a Japanese manga and anime series that follows on from the original Dragon Ball manga. Dragon Ball Super has been on hiatus since the ending of the Granolah arc in August 2022 and is set to resume in December.

Having a monthly release schedule, it began serialization in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine V-Jump in June 2015. As of November 2022, Dragon Ball Super has 87 chapters published in V Jump, with the first 84 chapters collected in 19 volumes.

The events of Dragon Ball Super take place after the defeat of Kid Buu. Goku and his friends continue their journey to become the strongest as they face numerous foes who threaten their very existence. The story revolves around wish-granting orbs that can be used for both good and evil. It’s up to Goku and the gang to maintain peace within our world.

The new Manga arc is a prequel to Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which is described by Crunchyroll as:

The Red Ribbon Army was once destroyed by Son Goku. Individuals, who carry on its spirit, have created the ultimate Androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. These two Androids call themselves “Super Heroes”. They start attacking Piccolo and Gohan… What is the New Red Ribbon Army’s objective? In the face of approaching danger, it is time to awaken, Super Hero!

The film has garnered $86,562,140 in the global box office. It has the third highest anime opening on the US weekend box office after Pokemon: The First Movie which earned US$31,036,678 in 1999 and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train which earned US$21,234,994 in 2021.

It is also the movie with the highest opening for an anime movie in US with it earning US$10.8 million on its first day. Whereas, the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie earned US$9.5 million and Pokemon: Mewtwo Strikes Back earned US$10.1 million.
