Update: We had previously misquoted a stat, and have changed it.
According to a recent infographic released by NPD, based on the data collected by Circana Bookscan, manga sales made up over 79 percent of adult comics and graphic novel sales in the United States in 2022. The numbers include only print unit sales.
Adult comics and graphic novel sales hit 35.7 million units (print only) in 2022, out of which manga made up 28.4 million units.
The manga sales increased by 3.2 million copies from 2021, where the print units sold were around 25.2 million, displaying a growth of 12.69 percent. Meanwhile, the overall market grew by around 4 percent from the previous year 2021.
According to data, the manga market has grown 27 times faster than the total print book market since 2019, with notable growths displayed in Oklahoma City (OK), Kansas City (MO), Milwaukee (WI) and Columbus (OH). All of these cities over-indexed in their manga growth.
The overall adult comics and graphic novels market grew by 4 percent, with manga contributing to 90 percent of these gains.

Manga has been dominating the comics and graphic novel sales in the US, as evident from the recent sales numbers reported by NPD Bookscan. In April 2023, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga volume 102 topped list of manga sold in the United States, it was closely followed by Naoya Matsumoto’s Kaiju No. 8 volume 6.
Recent trends have seen Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen and even Spy x Family dominate the comic and graphic novel sales in North America.
