Maomao heads to the market on the main street to buy a padded cotton garment for Chou-u. While looking through the clothes at a secondhand clothing store, Chou-u, who has accompanied her, becomes interested in a white garment hanging on the wall. It resembles the clothing of a foreign ethnic group, with vine-like embroidery adorning its sleeves. The shopkeeper calls it the “Robe of the Fire Rat” and begins to tell them the legend surrounding the garment: the tale of a beautiful celestial maiden who disappeared into a lake.
