Toei Animation Co., Ltd. is copyright striking videos on Youtube that have used their content. The incident came to light when YouTuber Mark Fitzpatrick came forward saying his videos were taken down by YouTube based on a complaint by Toei.

YouTube took down over 120 videos from the channel “Totally Not Mark” within 24 hours.

However, in his recent video that he uploaded as an open letter to YouTube and Toei Animation, Mark claimed that nine of the videos taken down did not contain any Toei material and were merely sketching videos.

He argued that Toei had not watched his clips before flagging it for copyright violations.

“I take my job very seriously. Because of this, I ensure that both, myself and my employees adhere strictly to the fair dealings and fair use policies as outlined by YouTube and within my own country and other countries.,” Mark said in the video.

Following Mark’s claims, Toei started trending on twitter.

This is not the first time that Toei and their copyright claims on YouTubers have been in the news.

In June this year, the official Toei JP website had released an urgent notice regarding the fake “Toei Animation UK” website that was falsely striking creators on YouTube. The officials confirmed that it was spoofing act using the e-mail address (@ toei.co.uk) and a domain name of the same.

In April 2020, Toei’s own channel Toei Tokusatsu World Official, which uploaded officially licensed episodes of classic tokusatsu (Japanese super hero shows), came under their own copyright strikes. YouTube deleted the channel within hours.

After the entire channel was removed, an alert noted that this action was taken due to “multiple third-party claims of copyright infringement regarding material the user posted.”
