Oshi No Ko Anime Shatters Records On HIDIVE Streaming Service

Anime streaming service HIDIVE revealed on April 22, 2023 that Oshi No Ko anime’s first episode had shattered all records to become the top ranked series launched in the streamer’s history.

The episode started streaming on HIDIVE from April 12, 2023, and within a week it had become the top streamed anime all time on the platform and had attracted the most new subscribers (from first stream). It also delivered the most trial starts added to the platform on the day the anime streamed.

”We’ve been anxiously awaiting the premiere of Oshi no Ko and we’re absolutely elated with the response from fans during its first week,” said John Ledford, President of HIDIVE. “Oshi No Ko is a truly one-of-a-kind anime series and its success to date really illustrates how much the story and characters have resonated with fans. There is so much more to come with the show!”

The news is not surprising, considering the fact that the series had dethroned Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood to take the spot of the top ranked anime on MyAnimeList within a day of its premiere. It still continues to occupy the top spot at the time of writing.

Oshi No Ko is based on the manga written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. The anime adaptation was by Doga Kobo, with Daisuke Hiramaki directing it. Saori Tachibana serves as the assistant director. Series composition was handled by Jin Tanaka and Kanna Hiramiya was in charge of character designs.

Rie Takahashi voiced one of the main characters and idol, Ai Hoshino in the anime.

Other cast includes:

  • Takeo Otsuka as Aqua
  • Yurie Igoma as Ruby
  • Kent Ito as Goro
  • Tomoyo Takayanagi as Sarina
  • Yumi Uchiyama as Aqua (child)
  •  Megumi Han as Kana Arima
  • Manaka Iwami as Akane Kurokawa
  • Rumi Okubo as Mem-Cho

YOASOBI performed the opening theme song for the anime “IDOL”. The full-length version of the song will be unveiled during the advanced screening of the anime.

Oshi No Ko manga has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump since April 2020, with its chapters collected in seven tankōbon volumes as of February 2022.

MAL describes the plot of the manga as follows;

Sixteen-year-old Ai Hoshino is a talented and beautiful idol who is adored by her fans. She is the personification of a pure, young maiden. But all that glitters is not gold.

Gorou Honda is a countryside gynaecologist and a big fan of Ai. So when the pregnant idol shows up at his hospital, he is beyond bewildered. Gorou promises her a safe delivery. Little does he know, an encounter with a mysterious figure would result in his untimely death—or so he thought.

Opening his eyes in the lap of his beloved idol, Gorou finds that he has been reborn as Aquamarine Hoshino—Ai’s newborn son! With his world turned upside down, Gorou soon learns that the world of showbiz is paved with thorns, where talent does not always beget success. Will he manage to protect Ai’s smile that he loves so much with the help of an eccentric and unexpected ally?
