Following the recent announcement of One Piece anime’s remake titled The One Piece at Jump Festa ’24, Hiromi Ishigami, an animator who’s worked on the ongoing anime adaptation of the series and also served as the animation director of One Piece Film: Red, took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the big news.
Ishigami began by expressing a sense of anticipation and curiosity, suggesting that the One Piece remake could give a fresh take to the ongoing series.
However, he also stated that the announcement of the remake made him a little sad as he felt that the efforts that the staff put in over the years will be diminished with the release of this newer adaptation.
“The ongoing anime remake is innovative. I wonder what it will turn out to be. I feel a little sad that the value of anime that we have built up over the years may be diminished,” Ishigami said in his post.
One of the comments on this post pointed that some viewers might never see the currently ongoing adaptation of One Piece anime. While the animator agreed to this sentiment, he hoped that viewers won’t ignore the current adaptation.
Ishigami added that he would be even more happier if viewers liked both the current adaptation and the remake which is set to roll out in the future.
On the other hand, a lot of other One Piece viewers who commented on Ishigami’s post said that they will not forget the current adaptation, and that it will be always be cherished. Some in particular acknowledged and appreciated the work Ishigami has done on the anime.
All the support from the fans apparently put the animator at ease, who said that it was a warm world out there that did not mind his narrow-mindedness.
“I am so glad that so many people from other countries are telling me that my narrow-mindedness is not true! It’s a warm world where people care about the works and even about me as a staff member. I’m so happy to hear that,” his tweet read.
One Piece anime is getting a remake as part of it’s 25th anniversary. Wit Studio will be producing The One Piece with a completely new animation, and will start by adapting the East Blue Saga. It will be exclusively streamed on Netflix.
One Piece manga series, written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, has been serialized in Shueisha’s shonen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump since July 1997, with its individual chapters compiled into 107 tankobon volumes as of November 2023.
