The official website of the upcoming NieR: Automata anime revealed a new trailer, which was streamed during a special program on Aniplex’s YouTube channel on Dec 28, 2022.

The trailer previews the theme songs and artists. Aimer performed the opening theme “escalate,” while amazarashi performed the ending theme song “Antinomy”.

Aimer’s comment:

I am very happy and honored to be asked to write the opening theme for the “NieR: Automata Ver1.1a” anime.
I created the opening theme song “escalate” with the idea of composing a song that would beautifully and magnificently decorate the world of “NieR: Automata,” while encompassing the pain and despair that the girls are experiencing.
I would be happy if this song can accompany you in the future as you continue to be trapped in the world of “NieR: Automata”.

amazarashi’s comment:

We previously collaborated with the game “NieR: Automata”, and now we have the opportunity to work on the ending of the anime “NieR: Automata Ver1.1a”. I am very happy. Thank you very much. I myself am only a fan of the Nier series, but I was honored to be given this role again, so I did my best to imagine a song that would be appropriate for the ending of Nier Automata, and I only hope that you like it. I named the song “Antinomy” to express the conflicts of the heart, such as when something you believe in is turned upside down in an instant, or when something you believe is good for you ends up hurting the other person.
If we can convey the pain and hatred felt by androids and mechanical life forms, as well as the hesitation that comes with the existence of love, as part of the animation, I believe we will have done our part. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a will start airing in January 2023 in Japan.

Nier: Automata is a 2017 action role-playing game developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. It tells the story of androids 2B, 9S and A2 and their battle to reclaim the machine-driven dystopia overrun by powerful machines.

In the game players take the role of these combat androids from the YoRHa units across an open world. The story requires multiple playthroughs, each unlocking additional story elements.

The plot of the anime is described as follows:

A small number of humans who escaped to the moon began a counterattack operation using <android> soldiers to recapture Earth. However, the battle falls into a stalemate in front of <machine lifeforms> that continue to multiply infinitely. As the ultimate weapon, mankind dispatches a new android <Yorha> unit to Earth. <2B>, who was newly dispatched to Earth, joins up with <9S>, an advanced investigator, and goes on a mission, but in the midst of that, he encounters a number of mysterious phenomena… This is the story of a lifeless android who continues to fight for humanity.

When rumors about the game’s anime adaptation had surfaced online, fans were skeptical about the development, arguing that the story of the game was too complex to be adapted properly into an anime.
