On Monday, 26th July, The Japan Cartoonists Association (JCA) announced the winners of the 50th Japan Cartoonists Association Awards. Koyoharu Gotouge’s dark fantasy series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Shueisha) bagged the Grand prize winner in the Comics Division, while Joruju Piroshiki’s self-published work NEW NORMAL! won the Grand prize in the Cartoon division.
Furthermore, Keito Koume’s manga adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Svetlana Alexievich’s non-fiction “The Unwomanly Face of War: An Oral History of Women in World War II (У войны не женское лицо)” won the Manga Kingdom Tottori award. Sōtensha’s EYEMASK one-panel manga won the Manga Kingdom Tosa award. Kenzo Takada’s Okiagari Koboshi project won the MEXT award.
Each grand prize includes a gold plaque, medal, certificate, and 500,000 yen (about US$4,500) in prize money while the other category winner will get a silver plaque, medal, and 200,000 yen (about US$1,800) in prize money. The award ceremony will be held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo on October 1.
Since 1972, the Japan Cartoonists Association (President and Approximately 2,450 members) has been awarding excellent works with the aim of spreading manga culture and improving and developing the manga world. Machiko Satonaka served as head of this year’s selection committee. The judges included Shōji Igo, Kamakiri Uno, Hiroshi Odagiri, Kōji Fujishita, Moto Hagio, Mitsuru Miura, George Morikawa, and Ikuya Kōmori.
