The Japanese Animation section of 34th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) will screen the premieres of Masaaki Yuasa’s INU-OH, the world premiere of Atsuko Ishizuka’s Goodbye, Don Glees!, Seiji Mizushima’s Hula Fulla Dance, and Ayumu Watanabe’s Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko.
The info was revealed in a press conference held on Tuesday, one of the first held, related to this year’s festival.
The theme of this year’s Japanese animation section is “Seeing 2021 Through the Main Character.”
Josee, The Tiger and the Fish and Looking for Magical DoReMi were among the anime films that were screened last year at the 33rd TIFF.
This year’s festival will be held from October 30 to November 8 with a mix of physical and online screenings. Hiroyasu Ando, the president of the festival, said that they would be monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and the global health situation in a bid to hold a successful event.
“I believe that cinema is an art form that reflects all of us as we deal with struggles and one that also gives us the courage to overcome such challenges. We will continue to exert our utmost efforts so that we can contribute to the fight against COVID-19 through the medium of cinema,” Ando said at the conference.
The festival will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Kamen Rider franchise.
The movies that will be screened at TIFF as a part of this include Kamen Rider Double the Movie Forever A to Z / The Gaia Memories of Fate, Masked Rider vs. Shocker, Masked Rider vs. The Ambassador from Hell, Masked Rider V3 vs. Destron, Masked Rider BLACK Hurry to Onigashima, and Masked Rider Decade the Movie: All Riders vs. Dai-Shocker.
Additionally, a documentary on animator Yasuo Otsuka will also be played at TIFF. Otsuka passed away earlier this year and the documentary will play as a part of the retrospective on Otsuka along with Isao Takahata’s Chie the Brat: Downtown Story and Yūgo Serikawa’s The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon.
