Mashima Hiro ( author of Fairy Tail, The Rave) put out a tweet earlier saying that an anime adaptation for his latest science fiction manga series Edens Zero will be coming soon. Additional details about the project will be revealed in the next issue of Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen magazine.
Edens Zero has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since June 27, 2018, with its chapters collected into nine tankōbon volumes as of April 17, 2020.
Edens Zero takes place in a fictional spacefaring universe inhabited by humans, aliens, and sentient robots. The universe is divided into smaller “cosmoses”, with the Sakura Cosmos serving as the primary setting. The plot follows Shiki Granbell who befriends two space traveling B-Cubers – Rebecca Bluegarden and her cybernetic cat companion Happy, when they visit his planet. The three set out in search of Mother, the fabled goddess of the cosmos, by exploring the universe.
Mashima’s previous work Fairy Tail, ended in July 2017. The anime adaptation which had 328 episodes came to an end in October 2018. After finishing Fairy Tail, Mashima had announced that he will be working on a new series in 2018. On May 30, the Weekly Shonen Magazine revealed that the new work will be tentatively titled Edens Zero.
Edens is an acronym for “Ether Drive Eternal Navigation System”.
