Shinkai’s Suzume No Tojimari Overtakes JJK 0 To Become Highest Earning Japanese Film In India

There wasn’t an ounce of doubt regarding the success of Makoto Shinkai’s Suzume No Tojimari movie in India. Not only is the director well respected and loved by the anime community in the country, his previous work, Weathering With You, had screened in Indian theatres after over 50,000 fans signed a petition to bring the film to the country.

So any previous record that the movie breaks or the new ones it sets in the future shouldn’t be seen as very surprising.

As with any anime movie released in the country, Suzume no Tojimari too was under heavy scrutiny when it came to its box office collections. The movie might have had a slow start, however, according to our sources, Suzume No Tojimari had overtaken the earnings of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie in India within 20 days of its release.

A press release that followed from PVR confirmed that Suzume was officially the highest earning Japanese Film in India.

It has crossed the 10 CR rupees mark in the country.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 had earned ₹5.4 crore in its first week.

The movie also overtook One Piece Film: Red worldwide to become the fourth highest grossing Japanese film around the world, earning $320 million.

Suzume no Tojimari released in India on April 21, 2023.

Shinkai directed and wrote the screenplay for Suzume no Tojimari. He’s also the author of the original story.

Nanoka Hara is voicing the titular character Suzume in the movie and Hokuto Matsumura will voice the other main character Souta Munakata.

  • Ryunosuke Kamiki as Tomoya Serizawa, a friend of Souta

RADWIMPS and Kazuma Jinnouchi composed the music for film, with Tik tok famed Toaka performing the theme song, “Suzume”.

Suzume No Tojimari film’s soundtrack comprises of two theme songs, “Kanata Haruka” and “Suzume,” twenty five additional songs and a brand new song created during the film’s production by Yojiro Noda, called “Tamaki”. RADWIMPS also released the official music video for KANATA HALUKA.

The officially announced story of Suzume no Tojimari is described as:

Suzume is a 17-year-old, who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu. One day, she meets a traveling young man who is looking for a “door.” Suzume decides to follow him and discovers an old door in the ruins in the mountains. As if drawn by something, Suzume reaches out for the door… What follows is Suzume’s liberation and growth as she closes the “doors” that cause misfortune in abandoned places around Japan.
