Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Alters Suletta & Miorine’s Marriage Confirmation; Fans Express Disappointment

Fans of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury were overjoyed as as it was seemingly confirmed that Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran had gotten married towards the end of the story. Clues in the final episode, where both characters were shown wearing rings on their ring fingers, strongly suggested their commitment to each other.

The official confirmation then came in the form of an interview with the voice actresses Kana Ichinose and Lynn, who portrayed Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran, respectively, in the latest edition of Gundam Ace magazine, which released on July 26, 2023.

During the interview, Kana Ichinose apparently confirmed that the two protagonists indeed got married towards the end of the story.

Checkout the excerpt from the interview below:

Lynn: “In that scene, I thought Suletta had died, and I was silently screaming in my heart. I cried. It may have been the first time I’ve cried during dubbing recordings.”

Kana Ichinose: “The scene where the two leaned toward each other in the epilogue was great. After 3 years, the two became even closer, and seeing them married and trusting each other really moved me.”

Lynn: “I hope Miorine looks forward and continues to move forward on her path with a smile.”

Kana Ichinose: “I bet no matter what big things happen in the future, the two will be fine. I wish them happiness for the rest of their lives.”

However, the excitement was short-lived as the digital version of the magazine altered Kana Ichinose’s comment in the interview. Specifically, the mention of marriage between the two characters was removed, leaving fans disappointed.

We can see that the part marked in the red box “結婚した (Married)” has been removed from the comment.

In response to the ongoing controversy, the official website of the anime released a statement on July 31, 2023, explaining that the mention of Suletta and Miorine’s marriage in the Gundam Ace interview was an error, and that the interview contained statements based on speculation from the staff.

According to the statement, corrections were requested during the proofreading process, however, the necessary adjustments were not implemented, leading to the discrepancies between the printed and electronic versions.

The complete statement is as follows:

Thank you for your continuous support of “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury.” We truly appreciate it.

Regarding the interview article featured in the September 2023 issue of Monthly Gundam Ace, we deeply apologize for any confusion caused to everyone supporting the work due to discrepancies in certain descriptions between the printed magazine and the electronic version.

In the said article, there were statements based on speculation from the Gundam Ace editorial staff. Despite having requested corrections during the proofreading process, the necessary adjustments were not implemented, and the magazine was released on July 26th with the discrepancies remaining.

As representatives of the work, we leave the interpretation and understanding of the main story to each and every one of you who has read it. We hope you enjoy the work. After consultation with the Gundam Ace editorial department, the electronic version’s description has been appropriately modified as originally requested and is currently available.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for causing great inconvenience and concern to everyone supporting the work.

We humbly request your continued support.

Despite the explanation, many fans took to social media to express their disappointment and frustration, and also called out their “interpretation tactics”.

Fans pointed out that there were plenty of evidence to support that Suletta and Miorine were married, such as wearing matching rings, discussing their idyllic countryside home. And not to forget, Eri even refers to herself as Miorine’s sister-in-law.

They also highlighted a perceived double standard of storytelling in Gundam, stating that depicting the negative impact of war and the horrors of violence is deemed acceptable. However, when it comes to portraying two girls getting married, it seems to trigger a completely different reaction.

In a satirical tone, one fan offered their “congratulations” to the characters, saying, “Ah yes, congratulations to Suletta and Miorine for getting ‘To be Interpreted’! I wish them a happy ‘To be Interpreted’.”
