Rumiko Takahashi, known for her manga Urusei Yatsura & Inuyasha, has been awarded with the Frances’ Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters) by the French Government.
The award ceremony was held on April 6, 2023, at the residence of the French ambassador in Japan.
The mangaka thanked all her fans and was really psyched upon receiving the award. She is overjoyed that people in France enjoy her work even though most of it is set in Japan, and promised to continue creating manga.
“Thank you very much for this great honor. I am very happy that the people of France are also enjoying my work, which is based on daily life in Japan. Encouraged by this, I will continue to draw manga as hard as I can. Thank you very much.“
The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (‘Order of Arts and Letters’) is an order of France established on 2 May 1957 by the Minister of Culture.
Its purpose is the recognition of significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields.
Among Japanese manga artists, the order has been awarded to Jiro Taniguchi, Katsuhiro Otomo, Leiji Matsumoto, Akira Toriyama, and Go Nagai.
