Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Transmutation, which is the second and the final part in the latest live action film series of the franchise, underperformed at the Japanese Box Office coming in at the 8th place, earning 70 million yen (~USD 551,027) in its opening weekend.
It failed to match up to its predecessor, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Avenger Scar, which earned 72 million yen in its first weekend. Final Transmutation also fared bad in terms of critic’s average rating, as it ranked sixth in Filmark’s first day satisfaction rating.
The movie also earned only 26.5 percent of the live action Fullmetal Alchemist film which released in 2017.
Final Transmutation got an average score of 3.22/5.0, based on 321 reviews. The Avenger Scar had, on the other hand, managed to score 3.31/5.0.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Transmutation released on June 24, 2022 in Japan across 345 theatres, more than a month after its first part had released. Both the movies, directed by Fumihiko Sori, commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hiromu Arakawa‘s original Fullmetal Alchemist manga.
The returning cast for the movie included Ryōsuke Yamada as Edward Elric, Atomu Mizuishi as Alphonse Elric (voice and motion capture), Tsubasa Honda as Winry Rockbell, Dean Fujioka as Roy Mustang, Misako Renbutsu as Riza Hawkeye, Kanata Hongou as Envy, Ryuta Sato as Maes Hughes, and Shinji Uchiyama as Gluttony.
Mackenyu Arata voices Scar in both parts of the live action film series.
The Avenger Scar had opened at 9th place in the Japanese Box Office.
Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist was serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Shōnen Gangan shōnen manga anthology magazine between July 2001 and June 2010; the publisher later collected the individual chapters into twenty-seven tankōbon volumes.
Bones Studio adapted the manga into two television series and two films. There are light novels of the same name as well.
Arakawa‘s latest manga series Yomi no Tsugai started serialization in the January issue of Monthly Shonen Gangan which was released on Dec 10, 2021. The mangaka returned to the industry after 10 years.
