The official Twitter account of Sword Art Online anime announced on Nov 6, 2022, that a new original movie for the SAO franchise has been greenlit. No information regarding the movie has been revealed yet.
A teaser was also revealed to commemorate the announcement of the new project.
SAO franchise’s recent film, Sword Art Online’s Scherzo Of Deep Night, released in Japan on Oct 22, 2022, after facing a delay due to COVID-19 related issues. It was initially supposed to release on Sep 10, 2022.
The movie was animated by A-1 Pictures, and directed by Ayako Kono.
Sword Art Online is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. Kawahara originally wrote the series as a web novel on his website from 2002 to 2008. The light novels began publication on ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint from April 10, 2009, with a spin-off series launching in October 2012.
An anime television series produced by A-1 Pictures aired in Japan between July and December 2012, with a television film Sword Art Online: Extra Edition airing on Dec 31, 2013, and a second season, titled Sword Art Online II, airing between July and December 2014.
An animated film titled Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, featuring an original story by Kawahara, premiered in Japan on Feb 18, 2017.
An anime film adaptation of Sword Art Online: Progressive titled Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night released on Oct 30, 2021
