Masahiko Minami, the president of Studio Bones, said at the recent Crunchyroll Expo on Aug 7, 2022, that contrary to the usual practice, there is no CGI used in Mob Psycho 100 anime.
“Most anime, even the ones we work on other than Mob Psycho, there is a hybrid structure to adding CGI along with hand-drawn animation, but in Mob Psycho there is no CG whatsoever,” Minami said.
According to the president, the reason he chose to abandon CGI for the anime was because he wanted to drill home the point of “how amazing and wonderful hand-drawn animation is.”
Minami revealed this while talking about the challenges that the studio faced while animating Mob Psycho anime. He added that creating hand-drawn animation was incredibly hard and took lot of effort from the staff.
“There is a lot of struggle that goes into creating hand-drawn animation; it’s in its own separate category,” he told Crunchyroll senior brand manager Chris Han.
Minami also praised the world building skills of Mob Psycho author ONE, saying that it was difficult for them to handle and express accurately while animating.
Studio Bones started adapting ONE’s Mob Psycho manga into an anime in 2016. The first season of the anime aired between July and September 2016, followed by a second season, which aired between January and April 2019.
A third season of the anime, is set to premiere in October 2022. The staff working the third season includes;
- Executive Director: Yuzuru Tachikawa
- Director: Takahiro Hasui
- Series composition: Hiroshi Seko
- Character Design: Yoshimichi Kameda
- Art Director: Ryo Kono
- Sound director: Kazuhiro Wakabayashi
- Music: Kenji Kawai
- Animation Production: BONES
The cast from the previous season will be reprising their role in the anime.
Mob Psycho manga was published in Shogakukan’s Ura Sunday website from April 2012 to December 2017. The manga’s chapters have been compiled into sixteen tankobon volumes.
