The official website of the Toronto Queer Film Festival announced to screen a dark comedy parody version of the iconic 90s anime Sailor Moon titled Sailor Moon Rated R: The Promise of His Rosebud fandub on April 1 at 9 p.m. EST.
The 68 min feature film focuses on issues related to queer folx, women, and people of colour based on the 1993 anime film Sailor Moon R Movie: Promise of the Rose, but dubbed with an original script and plot.
Toronto Queer Film Festival describes the plot of the film as:
In this parody feature, Darien struggles to confront his repressed sexuality when a fierce childhood cuddle buddy named Fiore returns to unmask Darien’s tuxedo. Possessed by the sex-positive Kisenian Blossom, Fiore faces off against the Sailor Scouts in a petty battle over Darien’s “D”.
In addition to the screening, a Q&A with filmmaker Harjot Bal will be conducted to entertain the audience. The Toronto Queer Film Festival will run from March 31 to April 3.
Initially, Bal uploaded the film on Instagram in September 2021, and in February, he released his second film.
Sailor Moon R: The Movie is a 1993 Japanese animated superhero fantasy film directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara and written by Sukehiro Tomita based on the Sailor Moon manga series written by Naoko Takeuchi. The film takes its name from the second arc of the Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon R, as Toei Company distributed it around the same time.
