Gin Tama and Grand Blue director Shinji Takamatsu posted a series of tweets on 29th May, Saturday regarding the influence of China’s strict censorship rules in the production of anime.
According to the above tweets, Shinji said that nowadays the production period for an anime is very long. On top of that has become very difficult to interpret when an anime is going to peak. The director had to face a lot of cases where all the episodes have to be delivered at once, and the main reason for that is because they have to go through a content check for China. And they strictly try to do this check three months before the broadcast. These cases are frequent for content where it’s difficult to be profitable domestically, so they have to sell it overseas.
According to him, there are instances where Japan needs more than Japanese viewers to make a profit off anime, and for that, if the Chinese Studio wants all the episodes three months before the broadcast, then the Japanese production team has no choice but to abide by their demand; even if that means the team has to through consequent projects.
