My Hero Academia manga author Kohei Horikoshi‘s author note in this week’s Weekly Shonen Jump issue released on April 10, 2022, revealed that the author has a desire to draw a horror manga.
“I have a small desire to draw a horror manga,” he wrote. “[A] very small [desire]”.
With Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia manga in its final arc, the author already seems to have an eye for his next work.
Horikoshi has previously tried his hand in the Fantasy Sci-Fi genre with his manga Barrage, which was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 2012, after initially being published as a one shot. The chapters were collected into two tankobon volumes.
Before Barrage, Horikoshi published the manga Oumagadoki Zoo, in which Hana Aoi, a part time worker at a zoo meets the Shiina, an anthromorphic rabbit who is also the head of the zoo. Aoi is tasked with making the zoo the best in the world so that she can help Shiina get his original body back and revoke the curse put on him by the ghost.
Last year in December, during the Jump Festa 2022 event, Horikoshi screened a special message indicating that My Hero Academia manga will end within a year. The series entered its “final act” in March 2021.
My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero manga series written and illustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi.
The manga has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump since July 2014, with its chapters collected into 33 tankōbon volumes as of February 2022. The series has also inspired numerous spin-off manga, such as My Hero Academia: Smash!!, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and My Hero Academia: Team-Up Missions, as well as an anime television series by Bones.
Its first season aired in Japan from April to June 2016, followed by a second season from April to September 2017, then a third season from April to September 2018, a fourth season from October 2019 to April 2020, and a fifth season from March to September 2021.
It has also received three animated films, titled My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising, and My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission respectively. There are plans for a live-action film by Legendary Entertainment.
As of January 2022, the manga had over 65 million copies in circulation worldwide.
