WWE star AJ Lee revealed that she is currently co-writing a new film for Toei Animation, the Japanese studio behind Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, and One Piece. Lee shared the news during her conversation with Stephanie McMahon on What’s Your Story?.
While the details about the film have not yet been revealed, Lee said the opportunity marks a full-circle moment in her life as a longtime anime fan. Speaking on the show, she explained that she and her Scrappy Heart Productions writing partner Aimee Garcia are collaborating on the upcoming film.
Lee expressed excitement about working with the studio that produced the very shows she grew up watching, calling it a dream come true to walk into Toei’s office and see Dragon Ball Z merchandise everywhere.
“I love anime so much, and so one of my favorite companies growing up was Toei. They did Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, and like these things that raised me. And so we are writing a movie for Toei Animation. I think that’s all I could say, but just such a dream come true to be in their office and see, like, all Dragon Ball Z figures everywhere,” she said.
The partnership with Toei Animation is the latest milestone in Lee’s expanding writing career, which has included comic books, television projects, and film screenwriting.
After stepping away from WWE in 2015, Lee wrote her 2017 memoir Crazy Is My Superpower, which went on to become a New York Times bestseller. In 2019, she teamed up with actress Aimee Garcia to launch Scrappy Heart Productions, focusing on diverse storytelling across multiple media.
The duo has since written comic series such as GLOW vs. The Babyface and Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World, before co-writing Netflix’s 2022 film Blade of the 47 Ronin.
In 2021, she contributed to DC Comics’ Wonder Woman: Black and Gold anthology.
Meanwhile, Lee recently returned to WWE television, making her comeback on Sep 5.
She is now set to team with Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Alexa Bliss, and Charlotte Flair in the upcoming Survivor Series: WarGames on Nov 29.
